Job Summary

Depending on the level of experience, we are open to considering candidates at the Principal level.

At HOOPP, we take a Total Portfolio Approach (TPA) to managing the Fund’s investment portfolio. TPA is an investment mindset centered on preparedness—ensuring the Fund is ready to respond when conditions change, whether driven by market dynamics or internal priorities. This means capital and risk are allocated dynamically across asset classes and investment strategies, with the ultimate goal of safeguarding and enhancing the Fund’s funded status over the long term.

The Total Portfolio Group (TPG) sits at the center of this approach. On behalf of the CIO, TPG leads the Fund’s asset allocation, portfolio construction, total-fund analytics, and economic research, ensuring that investment decisions are grounded in a whole-of-fund perspective. The group also supports the CEO and CIO on structural design elements such as investment governance, benchmarking, and performance attribution, and designs and advances HOOPP’s governance frameworks, including guardrails, investment policies, performance evaluation methodologies, and Board reporting.

Reporting to the SMD, Total Portfolio, the Senior Principal, Total Portfolio is a senior member of HOOPP’s Total Portfolio Group and serves as a key thought partner to both the SMD, Total Portfolio and the CIO. This role is both strategic and hands-on, reflecting HOOPP’s lean, high-performing team structure. The Senior Principal contributes directly to the Fund’s total portfolio strategy, asset allocation, and governance processes, while shaping frameworks that strengthen decision quality, preparedness, and institutional resilience. The Senior Principal provides leadership across research, portfolio design, and governance activities; engages directly with senior executives and committees; and helps mentor the next generation of talent within TPG.

What you will do:

  • Partner with the SMD, Total Portfolio and the CIO to shape and implement HOOPP’s Total Portfolio Approach (TPA), ensuring frameworks remain aligned with long-term funding objectives and the Fund’s mission.

  • Lead key elements of total-fund strategy development, including asset allocation design, portfolio construction, and dynamic risk budgeting.

  • Provide independent and well-reasoned views on portfolio trade-offs, balance sheet positioning, and preparedness under varying macroeconomic regimes.

  • Exercise sound investment judgment and influence decisions through analytical rigor, clear communication, and trusted relationships across the organization.

  • Represent TPG, as delegated by the SMD, Total Portfolio, at internal management and governance committees (e.g., Investment Committee, ALM Committee) and contribute to the development of Board materials.

  • Lead research on macroeconomic, factor-based, and cross-asset relationships to inform capital allocation and scenario planning.

  • Integrate asset-liability perspectives into total-fund decisions, ensuring balance sheet resilience and contribution stability.

  • Evaluate structural shifts in markets and risk premia, providing forward-looking insights that inform rebalancing and strategic tilts.

  • Actively contribute to the design of total-fund models and frameworks that embed adaptability and preparedness.

  • Co-lead the evolution of governance guardrails and performance measurement frameworks that reflect total-fund outcomes and funded-status objectives.

  • Ensure clarity, consistency, and analytical discipline across materials for the Board of Trustees, Investment Committee, and ALM Committee.

  • Strengthen the linkage between investment policy, funding policy, and risk appetite.

  • Drive continuous improvement in the transparency and effectiveness of governance processes.

  • Serve as a trusted partner to senior leaders across Public Markets, Private Markets, Finance, Risk, and Actuarial divisions, ensuring coordination of portfolio-level decisions.

  • Mentor Principals, Associates, and Analysts within TPG—building internal capability and fostering a collaborative “one fund” mindset across the investment organization.

  • Act as a change leader in embedding total-fund thinking and preparedness across HOOPP’s investment culture.

  • Model the team’s high standards of professionalism, partnership, and intellectual curiosity.

  • Represent HOOPP in peer and industry forums, contributing to the organization’s leadership in total-fund management and asset-liability integration.

  • Maintain awareness of emerging practices among global pension peers and integrate relevant insights into HOOPP’s frameworks.

  • Contribute to HOOPP’s external research and thought leadership agenda, reinforcing its reputation as a leading global practitioner of the Total Portfolio Approach.

  • Lead or co-lead strategic projects for the CIO and the SMD, Total Portfolio, including new asset-class evaluations, long-term capital market assumption updates, and total-fund preparedness frameworks.

  • Provide cross-functional leadership in enterprise-level initiatives involving Risk, Finance, and Operations.

  • Balance conceptual leadership with hands-on execution—personally developing, testing, and refining models, presentations, or analyses when required.

What you bring:

  • Minimum 10–15 years of experience in asset allocation, portfolio construction, investment strategy, or total-fund management within a sophisticated institutional investor or global asset owner.

  • Demonstrated ability to work across asset classes and integrate risk, return, and liquidity into total-fund positioning.

  • Proven track record of contributing to and influencing CIO- and Board-level investment decisions.

  • Extensive experience with governance processes, investment committees, and performance frameworks.

  • Experience managing or mentoring others, with an emphasis on talent development and knowledge transfer.

  • Deep understanding of liability-aware investing and asset-liability modeling (ALM).

  • Graduate degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related quantitative discipline.

  • Professional designations such as CFA, FRM, or MBA strongly preferred.

  • Deep expertise in portfolio theory, factor-based investing, dynamic asset allocation, and risk budgeting.

  • Advanced understanding of liquidity management, ALM integration, and macroeconomic scenario design.

  • Strong financial modeling and quantitative skills; ability to independently produce high-quality analysis to support strategic decisions.

  • Required proficiency with AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT and other large language models), with demonstrated creativity in using them to enhance research, writing, and portfolio analysis.

  • Familiarity with Python, R, or equivalent tools and strong command of Excel and visualization software.

  • Exceptional communication and synthesis skills—able to distill complexity into clear, actionable insights for senior audiences.

  • Proven ability to influence without authority, build consensus, and drive alignment across diverse stakeholders.

  • Strong situational judgment, humility, and interpersonal awareness.

  • Comfort engaging directly with senior executives, committees, and external partners.

  • Experience representing investment organizations in public or peer-facing forums.

  • Balance of strategic thinking and pragmatic execution; equally effective in conceptual design and hands-on delivery.
