This Senior Product Engineer role is central to moving complex optoelectronic products from design into volume manufacturing. The work shapes product performance, influences quality and reliability, and strengthens our partnerships across global engineering and manufacturing teams.

How you will make an impact:

  • Lead cross‑functional technical efforts that transition new optoelectronic products from R&D into full‑scale production, ensuring alignment with design intent.

  • Manage build readiness by defining prototype requirements, coordinating clear‑to‑build activities, and supporting manufacturing partners through each build phase.

  • Oversee production performance, including yield tracking, cost‑reduction planning, and Bill of Materials (BOM) accuracy throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Guide failure analysis and troubleshooting activities with internal engineers and contract manufacturers.

  • Define and maintain production test and process requirements in partnership with R&D, Operations, and manufacturing teams.

  • Conduct Design for Manufacturing (DFM) reviews for printed circuit boards (PCBs), ensuring manufacturability and compliance with assembly standards.

  • Drive pilot builds, production forecasting integration, and packaging design improvements, including sustainability and recycling initiatives.

The must haves:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Physics, Opto‑Electronic Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Electronic Engineering.

  • 7+ years of experience in the design, manufacture, or test of optoelectronic products.

  • Proven experience launching complex optoelectronic module products into production environments.

  • Strong understanding of Product Lifecycle Management and end‑to‑end NPI processes.

  • Demonstrated ability in solving technical challenges in fast‑paced, high‑pressure environments.

  • Experience collaborating with contract manufacturers or global suppliers.

  • Ability to travel as required to support manufacturing transfer and ongoing production.

Nice to haves:

  • Experience working with multifunctional, globally distributed engineering and manufacturing teams.

  • Strong analytical skills and advanced proficiency in data analysis tools or database systems.

  • Familiarity with production processes specific to optoelectronic component manufacturing.

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to support sales teams and customer discussions.

  • Experience reviewing or maintaining Process Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (PFMEA).

  • Knowledge of return‑material processes and root‑cause analysis methodologies.

  • Additional language skills (French, Spanish, or Thai).

Pay Range:

The annual pay range for this position in Ottawa is $109,000 – $174,000

Pay ranges at Ciena are designed to accommodate variations in knowledge, skills, experience, market conditions, and locations, reflecting our diverse products, industries, and lines of business. Please note that the pay range information provided in this posting pertains specifically to the primary location, which is the top location listed in case multiple locations are available.

Non-Sales employees may be eligible for a discretionary incentive bonus, while Sales employees may be eligible for a sales commission. In addition to competitive compensation, Ciena offers a comprehensive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision plans, participation in 401(K) (USA) & DCPP (Canada) with company matching, Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP), Employee Assistance Program (EAP), company-paid holidays, paid sick leave, and vacation time.
