Job Description

AECOM Kitchener office is seeking a motivated and skilled Senior Mechanical Engineer to support the design and construction of buildings within the Buildings + Places business line. You will work in a team environment with other engineers, technologists, BIM specialists, and project managers to deliver projects in this sector. You will also be a part of multidisciplinary project teams comprising of other engineering disciplines, consultants, and architects.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Preparing deliverables and products such as presentation materials, calculations, drawings, specifications, selections, and cost estimates related to heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing systems for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.
  • Performing field investigation for incorporating existing conditions into construction documents.
  • Performing construction administration duties, such as shop drawing review, RFI response, construction inspection, and respond to client questions.
  • Working within a project team environment and possessing good presentation and client interface skills.
  • Coordinating work with other project disciplines.
  • Working independently and making technical mechanical decisions based on building code interpretation and company standard practice.
  • Demonstrating creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving both routine and unusual project delivery, technical and client challenges, determining technical objectives and requirements, organizing programs and projects, and developing standards and guides for technical activities and applications.
  • Staying abreast of industry standards and approaches, and best practices.
  • Ensuring project work is undertaken in accordance with corporate health and safety policies and quality management systems.
  • Performing assignments of increased scope and complexity. Uses a variety of standard engineering methods and techniques in solving problems.
  • Mentoring and reviewing intermediate and junior level engineer’s work; technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed analysis, design, or computation methods.
  • Ability to manage large engineering based projects and assist in managing medium sized projects lead by architecture.
  • Applying standard practices and techniques in specific situations.
  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements: 

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. 
  • Minimum six (6)+ years’ experience (ideally with an engineering firm) designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, and light industrial facilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer eight (8)+ years’ experience (ideally with an engineering firm) designing HVAC and plumbing for commercial, institutional, light industrial facilities, wast-water and water pumping stations.
  • Prefer professionally licensed engineer. 
  • Working experience with codes and standards.
  • Experience using HAP, AutoCAD, REVIT, Microsoft Office including Excel, Word, Project, and Power Point.
  • Experience with Building Energy Modeling and their software platforms (IES, eQuest, Energy Plus, RETScreen, etc.) would be considered an asset.
  • Experience with sustainability standards (LEED, Net Zero, Passive House, Envision) would be considered an assetFire protection design experience would be considered an asset
  • Familiarity with ISO quality management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications.
  • Experience working within internal multidisciplinary teams.
  • Physically able to climb ladders and other mechanical equipment spaces.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite.
