Senior Mechanical Engineer – Site

Location - Oshawa, ON

Our Nuclear Canada business is experiencing significant growth driven in part by planned New Build projects underway internationally and domestically. Candu Energy Inc., an AtkinsRéalis company is involved in the deployment of the GEH BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor (SMR) at Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Darlington site. It will be the first grid-scale SMR deployed in Canada.

Your role within the team:

The qualified individual will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:

  • Represent Mechanical Design Engineering in the field during fabrication and construction.
  • Provide mechanical design support to the construction team in the field for the execution of system design packages.
  • Provide mechanical design support for the pre-fabrication activities.
  • Provide prompt response and engineering resolutions to engineering design technical issues in the field.
  • Ensure that the design is executed as per Design Packages released for construction and fabrication.
  • Process field initiated changes (FIC), deviations, non-conformances, and requests for information (RFI) in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Identify the type of field initiated change (Intent or non- Intent) and seek direction from the home office design team as required.
  • Act as interface between the construction team and the home office Mechanical design team and support/prepare processes for configuration control.
  • Work with other inter-discipline Site Support Design Engineers to ensure Engineering support is available to construction as required.
  • Ensure all changes are communicated to the design home office and proper approvals are acquired.
  • Interface with plant personnel to ensure that plant operability and nuclear safety concerns are adequately clarified.
  • Execute tasks following AtkinsRéalis/Candu Energy QA procedures, project-specific procedures/instructions and applicable codes/standards/regulation requirements.
  • May be required to take on leadership responsibilities and lead a group of Engineers/Analysts.
  • Project Management interface and supports:
    • Defining work scope, preparing budget estimates and schedules, and reporting progress.
    • Report to engineering or project management with timely updates on project performance for the assigned scopes or tasks.

The ideal candidate:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited University, with a minimum of 10 years of relevant design implementation/construction support experience (experience with green field construction and/or nuclear industry are assets).
  • Registered Professional Engineer in the Province of Ontario, member in good standing.
  • Working knowledge of construction work planning and field execution.
  • Working knowledge of pressure boundary codes and standards, including CSA N285.0, ASME BPVC Sec. III and Sec. VIII-Div. 1, ASME B31.1 is an asset.
  • Working knowledge of OPG processes and procedures is an asset.
  • Experience in interfacing with construction teams and acting as liaison between construction and design.
  • Experience in interfacing with TSSA and ANI to ensure compliance and resolution to code related requirements.
  • Knowledge of nuclear facility mechanical / process equipment and systems (nuclear and/or conventional).
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Results driven individual with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Eligible to obtain Security Clearances, Ontario Power Generation and AtkinsRéalis through Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC), are mandatory.
