The Senior Lead DevOps Engineer is responsible for driving the design, implementation, and optimization of DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud infrastructure. This role leads a team of engineers to enable faster, reliable, and secure software delivery while fostering a culture of automation, collaboration, and continuous improvement across development and operations teams.

Key Responsibilities

DevOps Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and lead the DevOps strategy, roadmap, and best practices across the organization
  • Mentor and manage a team of DevOps engineers, promoting technical excellence and innovation
  • Collaborate with engineering, QA, security, and product teams to streamline delivery processes
  • Champion a DevOps culture emphasizing automation, scalability, and reliability

CI/CD & Automation

  • Design, implement, and optimize CI/CD pipelines for continuous integration and deployment
  • Automate build, test, and deployment processes to improve speed and consistency
  • Integrate security practices into pipelines (DevSecOps)
  • Standardize deployment strategies (blue-green, canary releases, rolling deployments)

Cloud & Infrastructure Management

  • Architect and manage cloud infrastructure on platforms like AWS, Azure.
  • Ensure high availability, scalability, and disaster recovery capabilities
  • Optimize cloud costs and resource utilization

Containerization & Orchestration

  • Lead adoption of containerization technologies (Docker)
  • Manage and optimize container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes or equivalent)
  • Ensure efficient deployment, scaling, and monitoring of microservices

Monitoring, Reliability & Performance

  • Implement monitoring, logging, and alerting solutions (e.g., Splunk, ELK, Dynatrace, Cloud Watch)
  • Drive Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) practices including SLIs, SLOs, and error budgets
  • Troubleshoot production issues and lead root cause analysis
  • Continuously improve system performance and reliability

Security & Compliance

  • Implement secure DevOps practices, including secrets management and access control
  • Ensure compliance with organizational and regulatory standards
  • Conduct vulnerability assessments and integrate security scanning tools

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, or infrastructure engineering
  • Strong hands-on experience with CI/CD tools (Azure DevOps, AWS CDK, etc.)
  • Expertise in at least one cloud platform (AWS, Azure)
  • Proficiency in scripting/programming (Python, Bash, or similar)
  • Deep understanding of Linux/Unix systems and networking
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience leading DevOps transformation in large enterprises
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture and API management
  • Familiarity with security frameworks and DevSecOps practices
  • Certifications such as:
    • AWS Certified DevOps Engineer
    • Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA)
    • Azure DevOps Engineer Expert

Salary:

$94,600.00 - $176,000.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group’s expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group’s total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
