Senior Full Stack Engineer

Manulife / John Hancock is seeking a highly skilled Senior Engineer with expertise in Oracle stored procedures, Microfocus, Informatica, React, JavaScript, .NET/C# and Cloud Tools (Docker, Kubernetes) to join our Insurance Licensing engineering team. The successful candidate will design, enhance, and maintain complex components of our in‑house Licensing platform while providing technical leadership across modernization initiatives. This role will influence architectural decisions, guide engineering delivery, and ensure the evolution of the platform toward a modern cloud-based ecosystem.

Work Arrangement: Hybrid from nearest office (3 days in Office, 2 days from Home); Remote working arrangement is not available.

Position Responsibilities:

• Lead engineering enhancements, feature development, and technical delivery for the in‑house Licensing applications.

• Own and evolve core components built on Oracle stored procedures, MicroFocus Cobol and Informatica, ensuring stability, scalability, and maintainability.

• Provide technical leadership in the modernization of the legacy Licensing platform toward a cloud‑based architecture, including evaluating design options, selecting target-state technologies, and guiding engineering teams on implementation best practices.

• Partner with Product Owner, Architecture, and Project teams to translate business requirements into robust, well‑designed technical solutions.

• Drive continuous improvement through refactoring, performance tuning, and modernization of legacy components.

• Design and build scalable and secure APIs.

• Establish engineering standards, code quality practices, and documentation that support long‑term platform maintainability.

• Mentor junior engineers and influence engineering culture through best practices, knowledge sharing, and technical guidance.

• Own your work and the progress of your team, ensuring alignment with project goals and timelines.

• Troubleshoot complex issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement resilient long-term fixes.

• Collaborate with DevOps/Cloud teams to contribute to CI/CD pipeline improvements, environment readiness, and deployment processes.

• Support strategic planning, estimation, and roadmap definition for both legacy enhancements and modernization initiatives.

• Stay up to date on the latest web development technologies and trends.

• Use niche technologies such as GitHub Copilot to increase efficiency.

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

• 7+ years of hands-on engineering experience with enterprise-scale applications, including significant work in legacy modernization and technical leadership.

• Strong proficiency in Oracle stored procedures, MicroFocus Cobol, Informatica, React, JavaScript, .NET/C# and Cloud Tools (Docker, Kubernetes).

• Proven experience leading engineering delivery across complex, multi-system environments.

• Demonstrated ability to evaluate technical design choices, articulate trade-offs, and influence architectural direction.

• Solid understanding of software engineering best practices, including version control, automated testing, code review, and design patterns.

• Excellent problem‑solving skills, strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional partners.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience modernizing legacy applications to cloud-native platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, or GCP).

• Familiarity with modern programming languages/frameworks such as React, JavaScript, Java, C#, .NET Core, or Python.

• Experience with API design, microservices, or event-driven architectures.

• Hands-on work with DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, GitOps practices, or automated deployment tools, version control systems (e.g., Git) and project tracking software (e.g. Jira)

• Exposure to containerization (Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud migration patterns.

• Background in insurance, licensing, compensation, or financial systems an asset.

• Prior experience mentoring engineering teams and influencing engineering direction at a platform level.
