What you'll be doing

Senior Director, Corporate Tax Advisory & Planning will provide specialized advice, including tax accounting advisory, on a broad range of domestic Canadian corporate income tax matters. The role will be responsible for partnering with stakeholders across CIBC including our Corporate Development and Strategy teams for strategic investments, reorganizations, and liquidations, Treasury, for matters including securitizations and funding considerations, and domestic Canadian corporate income tax matters and structure considerations involving our Personal and Business Banking and Commercial Banking and Wealth businesses. The role will be responsible for leading domestic Canadian corporate income tax advice, risk assessment, and tax accounting assessment support related to CIBC’s corporate structure as well as providing support to stakeholders across CIBC in respect of strategic initiatives. The Senior Director, Domestic Corporate Tax Advisory & Planning will coordinate with the Tax Reporting, Compliance, and Tax Accounting team on all domestic Canadian corporate income tax aspects of new business initiatives, projects or new legislation affecting CIBC and its subsidiaries for tax accounting, tax compliance, and tax reporting purposes.

How you'll succeed

  • Domestic Canadian Corporate Tax- Lead and manage domestic Canadian corporate income tax matters and partner with internal stakeholders to support compliance with domestic Canadian income tax legislation impacting CIBC. Lead and manage the coordination of domestic Canadian corporate income tax advice and planning by liaising with indirect tax and tax reporting colleagues to incorporate indirect tax and tax accounting, compliance and reporting into domestic Canadian corporate income tax planning dimensions. Lead updates and developments in domestic Canadian corporate income tax matters. Keep abreast of tax legislative and administrative changes in respect of domestic Canadian corporate income tax and inform impacted stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Management- Analyze new domestic Canadian corporate income tax rules and work with various stakeholders to assess and quantify impact to CIBC. Support the income and indirect tax reporting teams on the effective implementation of projects/business initiatives with domestic Canadian corporate income tax dimensions, as well as monitoring any related ongoing tax reporting and/or tax accounting requirements.
  • Tax Guidance- Research for and provide technical guidance on domestic Canadian corporate income tax issues. Liaise with Canada Revenue Agency, Department of Finance (Canada), Canadian Bankers Association on Canadian domestic tax matters, including making submissions on Canadian corporate income tax matters, requests for rulings and interpretations, consultation on proposed legislation.

Who you are

  • You can demonstrate experience. 10 or more years of work experience in Canadian corporate tax advisory and planning, including correspondent tax accounting dimensions, in respect of financial institutions. Exposure to the financial services industry is as an asset however, consideration will be given to candidates who have a strong interest and desire to learn the financial services business.

  • You are a certified professional. Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation (preferably CPA, CA) or Master’s degree in Taxation, tax law, or related field, or a tax lawyer. Completed Levels I and II of the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Course. Completion of the In-depth International Tax course.

  • Strong presentation/ business interaction skills. Excellent research and analysis. Advanced problem-solving skills and ability to implement the solutions. Results-oriented, self-motivated, proactive and proven ability to work independently. Focused, thorough and disciplined in approach. Decisive, confident and comfortable working closely with and collaborating with business partners. Excellent communication and presentation skills.

  • You are analytical. Proficient with Microsoft Office products plus able to quickly learn new relevant add-on applications if required, e.g., Alteryx.

  • You understand that success is in the details. You notice things that others don't. Your critical thinking skills help to inform your decision making.
