What you'll be doing

The Senior Director, International Tax is a key leadership role within CIBC’s Finance function. Reporting to the VP, International Taxation and Transfer Pricing, this role will provide expert guidance on international tax matters, ensure compliance with evolving international tax regulations, and support business initiatives with strategic tax advice. This role requires strong technical expertise in the international tax regulatory landscape, thought leadership, and the ability to collaborate across functions and geographies to ensure effective execution of multi-geographical initiatives in alignment with business objectives and regulatory requirements. The role will be responsible for tax planning, providing risk assessment and tax advice to stakeholders across CIBC with a focus on strategic initiatives, including reorganizations and establishing operations in new jurisdictions.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. You’ll have the flexibility to manage your work activities within a hybrid work arrangement where you’ll spend 1-3 days per week on-site, while other days will be remote.

How you'll succeed

  • International Tax Delivery- Deliver specialized advice, planning and solutions on a broad range of international tax matters impacting CIBC and its Strategic Business Units. Assess and manage permanent establishment (PE) risks for cross‑border activities (including services and dependent agent scenarios), recommend branch vs. subsidiary structures, coordinate with employment tax and mobility implications to avoid unintended PEs. Design capital structures for foreign entities that balance regulatory, funding, and tax objectives, including development of repatriation strategies (dividends, returns of capital, share redemptions, interest, royalties) that optimize returns, considering exempt/taxable surplus, foreign tax credits, withholding tax, and FX impacts. Advise on non‑resident withholding tax implications for dividends, interest, royalties, services, and guarantee fees.

  • Stakeholder Management- Co-ordinate among various stakeholders and collaborate with transfer pricing, indirect tax and compliance teams across CIBC on matters including: transfer pricing for inter-company financing, guarantees, inter-company services, and intangibles; indirect tax considerations for foreign operations and integration with pricing and billing processes; accurate and timely Canadian outbound compliance for cross‑border transactions and foreign affiliates (e.g., T1134/T106 filings), and coordination with local tax registrations, returns, and information reporting in relevant jurisdictions.

  • Planning and Compliance- Lead Canadian foreign affiliate regime planning and compliance, including surplus tracking (exempt, taxable, hybrid surplus), FAPI analysis and mitigation, upstream loans, and ACB adjustments on FA shares and reorganizations. Manage audits and disputes relating to cross‑border matters; pursue APAs/MAP where appropriate and coordinate strategy with local advisors and tax authorities to resolve controversies efficiently. Provide proactive stakeholder education on international tax developments affecting foreign operations and translate technical changes into actionable business guidance. Build strong relationships with internal stakeholders, external advisors, and tax authorities. Stay abreast of changes in international tax legislation and administrative practices, proactively assessing their impact on CIBC and communicating relevant updates to stakeholders. Represent CIBC in industry forums and advocate for the bank’s interests in tax policy discussions. Mentor and develop team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth within the international tax function.
