Job Description:
As a senior database administrator and SQL Server expert, you’ll be responsible for the database tier of our application and ensuring our customers experience great performance and availability. The role has three high-level components: operations (over 2,000 databases across multiple servers and Azure regions), development (optimizations and reviews), and supporting analytics (building extracts and ETLS). The operations component of the role involves the management of 1,000+ databases across multiple servers and multiple environments. You’ll lead day-to-day database operations (for example, standard maintenance jobs and monitoring), transformative projects (for example, migrating and modernizing databases onto Azure), as well as performance monitoring and tuning. The development component of the role involves at times optimizing stored procedures and other times working with developers to optimize various database-related code. You’ll act as a code reviewer for database-related code changes, and in conjunction with developers and/or performance engineers you’ll ensure these changes are safe, deployable, and performant.
To succeed in this role you’ll need to be very strong with SQL Server, including different compatibility levels and Azure deployments. You also need to be a team player as we are a small team that works very closely together. Lastly, you should be driven to improve systems and solve problems – we move fast.
Responsibilities:
- Managing and enhancing database maintenance jobs and monitoring systems
- Performance monitoring and tuning using various tools and custom scripts
- Investigating issues in production and fixing root causes as and when needed
- Manage database version and compatibility level upgrades
- Re-writing SQL code to improve the performance of the application
- Reviewing database-related code changes
- Performing ad hoc data pulls for analysis
- Creating and automating standard analytics datasets via ETLs to be utilized by PowerBI
- Assisting other teams when required
Skills and Experience:
- 7+ years of experience working with different versions of Microsoft SQL Server, including the various versions available in Azure.
- Experience managing a large set of databases for a SaaS application
- Expert in performance monitoring, analysis, and tuning, including rewriting complex SQL to improve customer experience
- Experience automating routine DBA tasks using scripts
- Experience with Azure DevOps & PowerShell nice to have
