Workiva is seeking a Senior Data Engineer to help build and operate our cutting-edge self-service data platform. This platform enables teams across the organization to seamlessly ingest, transform, and serve data for applications, analytics, and AI/ML use cases.

In this role, you'll design, develop, and optimize scalable platform components across ingestion, transformation, and serving layers. You’ll take on complex challenges, drive operational excellence, and influence the strategic direction of our data platform, ensuring it remains reliable, efficient, and scalable.

What You'll Do

Platform Development

  • Design and develop scalable data ingestion pipelines using tools like Airbyte, Kafka, and Snowflake (Snowpipe, streaming, and external tables)

  • Build modular, maintainable transformations using dbt, following best practices for testing, versioning, and lineage tracking

  • Optimize data serving layers to deliver high-performance data products via Snowflake and visualization tools like Superset

  • Develop APIs and automation scripts to enhance the self-service experience for platform users

Operational Excellence

  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and observability solutions to ensure platform reliability and performance

  • Optimize resource usage and costs through strategic pipeline design, materialization strategies, and system tuning

  • Troubleshoot and resolve production issues, contributing to incident management and platform stability

Collaboration & Leadership

  • Work closely with cross-functional teams, including data analysts, application engineers, and infrastructure teams, to understand and support platform requirements

  • Mentor and guide team members on best practices, code quality, and scalable architecture

  • Participate in code reviews, architectural discussions, and design sessions to maintain high engineering standards

Innovation & Strategy

  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in data engineering, AI/ML, and platform technologies to drive innovation

  • Identify opportunities for platform improvements and contribute to the roadmap

  • Advocate for scalable, forward-thinking solutions to meet evolving business needs

What You'll Need

Required Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, platform engineering, or a related field

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or a related field—or equivalent professional experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proven expertise in designing and operating modern data pipelines using tools like Airbyte, Kafka, dbt, and Snowflake

  • Strong background in building scalable, production-grade data solutions

  • Proficiency in SQL and Python, including experience building reusable libraries and automation

  • Strong understanding of data modeling, transformation workflows, and performance optimization

  • Hands-on experience with CI/CD workflows, GitOps, and infrastructure as code

  • Analytical problem-solving skills with a focus on delivering reliable, high-quality solutions

Travel Requirements & Working Conditions

  • For remote working opportunities, a stable internet connection is required

  • Occasional travel may be needed for team meetings, conferences, or company events

How You’ll Be Rewarded

✅ Salary range in the US: $111,000.00 - $178,000.00

✅ A discretionary bonus typically paid annually

✅ Restricted Stock Units granted at time of hire

✅ 401(k) match and comprehensive employee benefits package

The salary range represents the low and high end of the salary range for this job in the US. Minimums and maximums may vary based on location. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience and other relevant factors.
