RidgeTech Automation is seeking a highly skilled Senior Controls Designer to join our growing team.
The ideal candidate will have a post-secondary degree/diploma in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems, or Robotics & Automation. A minimum of 5 years of experience in the Controls and Automation industry is essential. Experience in performing the following role responsibilities is required:
Electrical & Controls System Design:
- Create complete electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, and I/O documentation using EPLAN and/or AutoCAD (ACAD)
- Develop power distribution, motor control, safety circuits, and control panel designs in compliance with project requirements
- Apply applicable electrical codes and standards (i.e. UL, IEC, CSA, etc.)
Design Standards & Documentation:
- Establish, maintain, and enforce electrical design standards and best practices
- Produce accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs), cable schedules, terminal plans, and panel layouts
- Ensure drawings are complete, consistent, and ready for panel manufacturing, installation, and commissioning
- Perform self-checks and peer reviews to ensure quality and accuracy of deliverables
Project Leadership & Coordination:
- Act as the technical lead for controls design on assigned projects
- Collaborate with team members, i.e. PLC programmers, account managers, and project managers
- Support project quoting by providing design effort estimates, schedules, and technical input
- Participate in design reviews with clients, vendors, and internal team members
Software & Hardware Integration:
- Coordinate electrical design with PLC, HMI, VFD, servo, robotics, and safety system requirements
- Select and specify electrical components, sensors, drives, and control hardware
- Ensure designs align with PLC I/O architecture and field device requirements
Manufacturing & Field Support:
- Provide technical support to panel shop during fabrication and wiring
- Resolve design issues and implement revisions as needed during build and installation
- Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup activities as required
- Review redlines and ensure final “as-built” documentation is accurate
Continuous Improvement & Mentorship:
- Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, automation, and reuse within EPLAN and ACAD
- Mentor junior designers and provide technical guidance and design reviews
- Stay current with evolving electrical standards, tools, and industry best practices
Safety & Compliance:
- Design systems with a strong focus on personnel safety and machine safeguarding
- Support functional safety concepts and documentation where required
- Ensure all designs meet client specifications and regulatory requirements
