We are seeking skilled professionals to join the Investment Risk Oversight (IRO) team within the Global Wealth & Asset Management (GWAM) segment. The IRO is part of the 'second line' risk function, reporting to the Chief Risk Officer of the GWAM segment. In this role, you will collaborate with team members and internal stakeholders to enable independent oversight of investment risks managed or manufactured within Manulife’s GWAM segment.

Key responsibilities include transforming extensive risk datasets to improve risk reporting capabilities and crafting risk narratives that meet both global and regional needs. Additionally, you will develop and optimize risk data infrastructure and processes in collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure data integrity and seamless integration. The role is well-suited for early-career professionals with a strong interest in artificial intelligence (AI), demonstrated curiosity for experimenting with AI models, and a desire to learn and develop AI-enabled workflows on the job.

Individual Responsibilities:

Risk Infrastructure and Data Management:

  • Maintain and enhance risk infrastructure for collecting, storing, and managing risk data, including data lakes, data warehouses, and data pipelines, ensuring data integrity and accessibility by often utilizing programming languages such as Python, R, or SQL.
  • Work in close collaboration with technology, data, and other relevant teams to ensure seamless data flow and integration.
  • Collaborate with relevant functions to ensure the high integrity of risk analytics produced from the risk systems.
  • Collaborate with data and technology teams to design and implement AI-enabled workflows - using APIs from platforms like OpenAI or Azure OpenAI to automate data transformation, generate insights, and enhance the efficiency of risk reporting and decision-making processes.

Risk Reporting:

  • Serve as subject matter expert for investment risk reporting and analytics for GWAM and its underlying business units / regions, ensuring accurate and timely reporting, coupled with concise narratives of key observations and areas of concern.
  • Develop comprehensive dashboards using data visualization tools like Microsoft PowerBI or Tableau to effectively communicate complex investment risk concepts and actionable insights to stakeholders.
  • Develop, maintain, and enhance aggregated Key Risk Indicators for inclusion in reports distributed to stakeholders.
  • Leverage AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot, along with prompt engineering techniques, to analyze investment risk data, derive insights, and enhance the efficiency and clarity of reporting.

Process Optimization:

  • Manage and prioritize queue of development and enhancement requests for existing tools and solutions.
  • Enhance data quality and improve the efficiency of risk processes to ensure accurate and reliable risk assessments.
  • Identify, evaluate, and implement tools and platforms to streamline risk management processes such as automate risk reporting capabilities.

Stakeholder Engagement:

  • Collaborate with team members (i.e. the investment risk managers) and stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Facilitate the effective operation of regional investment risk forums by preparing discussion materials and engaging in discussions with forum members to address key observations and concerns.

Regulatory Compliance and Industry Standards:

  • Stay abreast of regulatory requirements and industry standards related to investment risk oversight, ensuring compliance and adherence to best practices.
  • Proactively assess market developments to determine their impact on risk exposures and ensure timely, accurate reporting to stakeholders.
Job Requirements:
  • A bachelor’s degree in finance, economics, mathematics, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 3+ years of experience in investment risk, risk reporting, analytics, or risk data management within a buy-side investment management firm or related financial institution, with an understanding of investment risk principles.
  • Experience with data visualization tools such as Microsoft PowerBI or Tableau.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python, R or SQL, with the ability to develop and manage database queries.
  • Pursuing or completion of professional certifications like CFA, FRM, PRM, or CAIA is desirable.
  • Experience with implementing or exposure to any market risk analytics system (e.g., MSCI, Bloomberg, etc.) is desirable.
  • Familiarity with generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Copilot etc. to accelerate analytical tasks.
  • Experience through coursework, personal projects, internships, or previous roles involving AI is highly valued.
Competencies:
  • Strong quantitative and analytical skills, with proficiency in statistical analysis and the ability to manipulate and interpret large datasets.
  • Keen interest in exploring how AI can enhance investment risk management processes.
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple priorities with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, along with strong interpersonal abilities.

When you join our team:

  • We’ll empower you to learn and grow the career you want.
  • We’ll recognize and support you in a flexible environment where well-being and inclusion are more than just words.
