Ideal candidates are passionate, innovative problem-solvers who contribute to a culture of delivering results with pride and are empowered to enable growth and progress together with the firm.

Citi is looking for a Senior AI Engineer (Applications Development Technology Lead Analyst - C13) to design and deploy intelligent, autonomous AI agents that solve complex, real-world problems at the intersection of finance and cutting-edge technology. In this senior individual contributor role, you will translate research into production-grade agentic systems, working alongside AI researchers, data scientists, and engineers to embed autonomous AI capabilities into Citi's technology ecosystem. Your work will directly shape how Citi leverages AI to automate workflows, enhance decision-making, and deliver scalable solutions across the organization.
Responsibilities:

  • Design and build intelligent AI agents — covering perception, reasoning, planning, and action execution — that operate autonomously to solve high-impact business challenges.
  • Architect scalable, high-performance agentic systems that meet rigorous standards for reliability, security, and production readiness.
  • Integrate large language models (LLMs), reinforcement learning, and predictive models to expand agent capabilities and sharpen decision-making.
  • Develop agents that automate complex workflows and optimize processes across multiple business domains, translating research concepts into robust, deployable solutions.
  • Define and implement evaluation frameworks and performance metrics to continuously measure, optimize, and improve agent behavior.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams — including AI researchers, data scientists, and product managers — to embed agentic solutions into broader products and services.
  • Partner with engineering and architecture teams to ensure AI system designs align with Citi's overall technology strategy and standards.
  • Produce clear, comprehensive technical documentation covering agent designs, implementations, and operational procedures.
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.

Required Qualifications & Skills:

  • 6+ years of professional software development experience, with a focus on AI, machine learning, or agent-based systems.
  • Proficiency in Python and SQL, with the ability to build and maintain production-quality AI systems.
  • Hands-on experience with machine learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch, and libraries including Scikit-Learn, NumPy, and Pandas.
  • Practical knowledge of LLMs and their application within agentic architectures, including API design and integration for AI services.
  • Experience applying software engineering best practices: version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and code reviews.
  • Demonstrated ability to deploy and manage applications on cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) using containerization technologies such as Docker and Kubernetes.

Beneficial Qualifications & Skills:

  • Familiarity with agentic AI frameworks such as LangChain, AutoGen, CrewAI, or RAG pipelines, or research experience in multi-agent reinforcement learning.
  • Experience working in the financial services industry.
  • Proficiency in Java as an additional programming language.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree/University degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, or a related quantitative field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Master’s degree preferred
