As Senior Advisor in Community and Indigenous Relations (SACIR), you will be part of the corporate office team and play an active role in supporting the development and implementation of community programs at Northland’s operating facilities. Reporting into the Director, Community and Indigenous Relations, you will initially work with our teams across North America, with the possibility of eventually expanding into Central and South America as well as Europe.
Frequent travel to sites and projects is required.
This role will be based in Toronto, and you will be expected to work from our corporate office a minimum of 3 times a week in line with our hybrid work model.
Key Responsibilities:

Carry-out community research and based on results, originate and guide relationship building with local and Indigenous communities related to new Northland Projects.

Lead local Community Liaison staff particularly in weekly social team meetings.

For each jurisdiction, coordinate with Development, Construction and Operations on the creation, execution and management of region specific Indigenous and Community Affairs Programs.

Define, design, lead, and oversee the documentation of consultation processes as well as the production of project-specific Social Impact Assessments, consistent with Northland Power’s Commitment to Local and Indigenous Communities Statement.

Develop, execute and manage consultation programs with Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Communities.

Negotiate agreements with Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Communities to support corporate business activities.

Be a company resource on government policy and regulations for the Indigenous and Social areas and offer expertise and guidance to business team leaders.

Assist in sourcing and contracting external Indigenous and Community Affairs consultants with Development, Construction and Operations teams in various jurisdictions.

Establish, build, and maintain a comprehensive network of national and international relationships in the industry, and co-ordinate Northland’s participation in related industry associations and stakeholder groups.

Report Indigenous and Community Affairs’ opinion, progress and ongoing strategic focus to senior management in general and with respect to particular projects.

Offer training and professional development opportunities to Northland head office and field staff on Indigenous and Community Awareness.

Learn the basics of the history, culture, and heritage of the communities you work with.

Identify real needs and opportunities for the communities and design solutions.

Foster community understanding, local development and programs, a healthier economy and through this, community approval for the projects.

Promote local employment, community workshops, and STEM education.

Manage the community and Indigenous “Media Scan”.

Travel across Canada, the Americas and overseas is an important element of this position.

Qualifications and Experience

3+ years of relevant experience as a Senior Advisor or equivalent, in community or Indigenous relations.

Advanced computer skills (MS Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook).

Valid driver’s license required.

Proficiency in an international language other than English would be an asset.
