Huawei Canada has an immediate permanent opening for a Researcher.

About the team:

The Huawei Human-Machine Interaction Lab unites global researchers, engineers, and designers to redefine human technology relationships through user centered, hands on research. We focus on agentic AI and multimodal interaction (voice, touch, vision, gesture) across smartphones, wearables, and emerging devices—advancing agentic workflows, multi-agent orchestration, and intuitive human-AI interfaces. By tightly integrating sensing, algorithms, and systems, our prototype driven work ships directly to products, enabling seamless task delegation and human AI collaboration at scale.

About the job:

  • Build and ship AI/ML capabilities that power next-generation Huawei intelligent products, including smartphones, smart glasses, wearables, and emerging devices.

  • Design, prototype, and evaluate deep learning models across vision, language, audio, and video, and advance their integration into real product experiences.

  • Translate cutting-edge research in generative AI, foundation models, and efficient inference into robust, scalable prototypes and product-ready solutions.

  • Own end-to-end model development workflows: data curation, training, fine-tuning, evaluation, optimization, and deployment on device or in the cloud.

  • Partner with researchers, engineers, designers, and product managers to identify high-impact opportunities and deliver measurable user and business outcomes.

  • Contribute to a culture of technical excellence through reproducible experiments, thorough documentation, code review, and knowledge sharing.

  • Publish and patent innovations at top-tier venues when appropriate.

The total target annual compensation for this position ranges from $106,000 - $156,000 depending on education, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

About the ideal candidate:

  • PhD, Master’s, or Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.

  • Solid foundation in machine learning, deep learning, and statistical modeling; hands-on experience building and training models with PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX, or similar frameworks.

  • Track record of translating research ideas into working prototypes, demonstrable systems, or shipped product features.

  • Experience with one or more of: computer vision, natural language processing, speech/audio processing, generative models, multimodal learning, recommendation systems, or efficient model optimization.

  • Strong software engineering skills in Python; familiarity with C++, CUDA, or on-device inference frameworks is an asset.

  • Comfortable working with large-scale datasets, distributed training, model evaluation, and MLOps tooling.

  • Excellent problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills in cross-functional, fast-moving environments.

  • Research contributions via publications, patents, or open-source projects are an asset.
