Location: Oakville/Hamilton – The expectations is to be onsite at a university lab 2 to 3 times per week and some flexibility with being onsite at the Sartorius Oakville office

Growth and ideas that simplify progress.

You will be responsible for developing early-stage proof of concept projects on the topics of modeling, simulation, automation, and optimization of bioprocesses. Specifically, the successful candidate will implement models, test methods, and coordinate experimental validation.

You will work closely with other members of the global advanced data analytics team in these development and implementation tasks. A primary responsibility of this role will be to interact closely with commercial receiving entities including Sartorius product development and product management teams to enable tech transfer outside of corporate research. The successful candidate will also work closely with Sartorius customers to understand upcoming needs and gather feedback on new scientific results.

What you will accomplish together with us:

  • Coordinate, plan, and oversee execution of validation experiments by internal and external corporate research collaborators.

  • Manage scientific communication with customers, product managers, product development, and other stakeholders.

  • Develop modeling and simulation methodology for use in digital twin and advanced process control of bioprocesses.

  • Provide practical input on issues like data connectivity, equipment coordination, and communication layers in the context of real time simulation and advanced control.  

  • Develop technical documentation of new inventions to enable transfer to receiving commercial teams.

  • Maintain knowledge of challenges in bioprocess operations, develop methods to fill gaps in practical implement-ability of new automation and simulation technologies.

What will convince us:

  • PhD in bioprocess engineering.

  • 3+ years of practical experience running bioprocesses in a lab setting.

  • Deep knowledge of continuous chromatography systems (BioSMB or equivalent) with experience implementing online software solutions for these devices (soft sensors, automation algorithms, data visualization, alarm systems, etc.)

  • Experience with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation in practical applications

  • Excellent presentation skills, preferably with deep experience presenting both publicly (conferences etc.) and within teams.

  • Experience working in academic/industrial collaborations within Canada.

  • Good customer focus, able to address customers’ issues in order of priority and to update them on progress.

  • Excellent relationship builder, able to initiate and maintain basic relationships within the team.

  • Excellent decision-making skills, able to make choices by applying evidence relevant to the specific situation.

  • Good team player able to share responsibilities and knowledge within the team to achieve common goals.

Travel: International travel approximately once per month
