Job Description

Rail Track Designer based in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, supporting multidisciplinary railway and transit infrastructure projects. The role contributes to the development of railway track alignments, trackwork layouts, engineering drawings, BIM models, and related transportation infrastructure within a collaborative engineering environment.

Working across design and delivery phases, this position supports the preparation of plan and profile alignments, cross-sections, drainage elements, quantity take-offs, technical documentation, and interdisciplinary design coordination. Project work involves integration with civil, structural, signalling, traction power, and systems disciplines while utilizing survey information, LiDAR datasets, terrain models, and digital engineering workflows.

The ideal candidate has at least two years of experience in rail, transit, transportation, or civil infrastructure design and possesses strong technical drafting capabilities, attention to detail, and familiarity with railway design standards and constructability considerations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop railway track alignment design solutions in plan, profile, and corridor layouts.
  • Prepare and maintain detailed CAD/BIM engineering drawings and three-dimensional design models.
  • Utilize survey data analysis, LiDAR point clouds, and digital terrain information to support design development.
  • Produce trackwork design layouts, cross-sections, and associated rail infrastructure drawings.
  • Support drainage design and track structure development activities.
  • Prepare, revise, and manage technical drawing packages and engineering deliverables.
  • Assist engineering teams in developing practical and constructible design solutions.
  • Perform interdisciplinary coordination with signalling, traction power, civil, structural, and systems teams.
  • Complete quantity take-offs and support project cost estimation activities.
  • Contribute to technical reporting, specifications, and project documentation.
  • Conduct drawing verification to ensure compliance with design standards, project requirements, and quality procedures.
  • Participate in design reviews and multidisciplinary coordination meetings.
  • Provide additional rail infrastructure design support across project teams as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • College diploma or university degree in Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Railway Engineering, Architectural Technology, CAD/Design Technology, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant experience in CAD design, civil infrastructure, transportation engineering, rail, transit, or related sectors.
  • Experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRail, Bentley Power Rail Track, or comparable CAD/BIM design platforms.
  • Understanding of engineering design principles, technical drawings, and digital design workflows.
  • Experience working with survey information, LiDAR data, and digital terrain models.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary engineering environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage competing priorities and meet project schedules.
  • Fluency in both English and French.

Assets

  • Experience supporting railway corridor, transit, or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Exposure to multidisciplinary engineering coordination across rail systems disciplines.
  • Familiarity with rail design reviews, constructability assessments, and project delivery processes.
  • Experience supporting cost estimating, specification development, and engineering documentation.
  • Exposure to BIM execution processes and digital engineering environments.
