About the Role

Hacksmith Industries is seeking a Process Engineer to support and scale production of the Smith Blade. This role is responsible for designing, optimizing, and standardizing assembly workflows, kitting processes, quality checks, and production systems to enable efficient, repeatable, and high-quality output.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, systems-oriented, and comfortable working directly on the production floor to improve throughput, reduce errors, and support the transition from early production to sustained volume manufacturing.

Key Responsibilities

Assembly Process Development

  • Design, document, and optimize end-to-end assembly processes
  • Develop standard work instructions, visual aids, and assembly documentation
  • Improve takt time, line balancing, and work cell layouts
  • Support scaling from pilot builds to steady-state production

Quality & Error Reduction

  • Implement in-process quality checks and poka-yoke (error-proofing) solutions
  • Identify root causes of assembly defects and drive corrective actions
  • Reduce rework, scrap, and warranty risk through process improvements
  • Support final inspection and packaging quality standards

Production Optimization

  • Identify and eliminate bottlenecks in assembly, finishing, inspection, and packaging
  • Improve throughput while maintaining quality and ergonomics
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives

Tooling & Fixtures (Assembly-Focused)

  • Design assembly fixtures, jigs, and aids to improve consistency and ergonomics
  • Work with internal teams or vendors to implement fixtures and tooling
  • Evaluate assembly tooling effectiveness and recommend improvements

Data & Reporting

  • Track assembly metrics such as:
    • Throughput
    • First-pass yield
    • Rework rates
    • Assembly time per unit
  • Use data to justify process changes and capacity planning decisions
Qualifications & Experience
  • Degree or diploma in Manufacturing Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years experience in assembly-focused process engineering or production engineering
  • Strong understanding of manual and semi-automated assembly systems
  • Experience with lean manufacturing principles in an assembly environment
  • Comfortable working hands-on on a production floor
Nice-to-Have
  • Experience with precision mechanical assemblies
  • Experience scaling assembly operations in a startup or high-growth manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with quality systems and inspection methods
  • Experience with ERP or manufacturing execution systems (MES)
  • Exposure to light automation or assisted assembly systems
Perks of working at Hacksmith
  • Gourmet lunch every work day (we have a very skilled chef on staff)
  • Snacks and coffee to keep you fueled
  • Competitive vacation policy
  • Health Spending Account (HSA)
  • Gym membership benefit
  • Safety shoe allowance

You must be legally allowed to work in Canada and be local or willing to relocate. This role is based in Cambridge, Ontario and telecommuting is not an option.

Salary Range: $60-85k plus benefits.
