About the role
The Managing Director, Total Portfolio Integration & Transformation will be reporting directly to the Chief Investment Officer and be a valued contributor to the Investment Strategy & Planning Committee. The role is expected to contribute significantly to investment decision making as well as advancing OPTrust’s “One Team - One Fund” operating model and culture.
This role is designed to bring strategic clarity, cross-functional coordination, and disciplined execution to the evolution of OPTrust’s investment capabilities. Important to this mandate is leading the management of the CIO’s Strategic Innovation Portfolio, aimed at accelerating internal capability development and identifying areas within the Total Portfolio that are at risk of disruption. By integrating technology, innovation, and advanced analytics with investment strategy, macro insights, and risk factor analysis, the role provides a unified leadership position that serves as a critical enabler for informed, Total Portfolio decision-making.
The success of this role will require the ability to work effectively across the three investment teams within OPTrust: Liquid Assets, Illiquid Assets and the Office of Chief Investment Officer as well as with functional partners such as ITOS, Finance and Investment Risk.
What you’ll do
Portfolio Modernization Strategy and Vision
Working with the CIO and functional partner leaders, define and communicate a clear, multi-year vision for modernizing OPTrust's investment platform, establishing target outcomes, guiding principles, and required capabilities across portfolio risk, research, analytics, and decision support
Translate the CIO's strategic priorities for Total Portfolio management into an actionable roadmap with clear sequencing and traceability to measurable business outcomes supported by modernization efforts that are coherent and compounding rather than a collection of disconnected initiatives
Drive a deliberate, phased approach to modernization, starting with targeted, constrained pilots focused on removing low-value work from investment teams so they can focus on higher-value portfolio management activities
Manage the CIO’s Strategic Innovation Portfolio
Build and manage a small portfolio of strategic relationships with external partners, including: leading asset managers and financial services firms, technology leaders and peer institutions with the strategic benefits of accelerating internal capability development and access to leading practices
Manage the assets to meet portfolio objectives
Represent OPTrust in innovation and portfolio modernization forums, strengthening OPTrust's external profile as a forward-thinking institutional investor
Identify areas within the Total Portfolio that are ripe for disruption and could benefit from innovation
Foster a culture of disciplined innovation, continuous learning, and intellectual rigor
Develop future leaders who can bridge the gap between investment expertise, technology capability, and operational excellence
Manager an Investment professional
Portfolio Risk and Analytics Framework Enhancement
Lead the development of an integrated framework for portfolio risk identification, measurement, and reporting that enhances the CIO's ability to make informed decisions on Total Portfolio risk and risk factor allocation
Ensure efforts strengthen rather than disrupt existing risk processes, with a focus on data integrity, robust controls, and auditability
Define data requirements, ownership, stewardship, and quality standards for the portfolio analytics and risk insights platform
Research and Investment Process Modernization
Serve as the initial beachhead for modernization by working with investment teams to help transform how they use technology and data to conduct research, access information, and synthesize insights
Identify and deploy capabilities that enhance the quality and depth of investment research across asset classes, enabling portfolio managers and analysts to focus on higher-value analytical and judgment-intensive work
Focus on implementation where technology supports and enhances human decision-making
Establish clear decision frameworks for assessing emerging technologies and capabilities, ensuring adoption is responsible, secure, and value-driven
AI and advanced analytics are key enablers of this mandate, deployed in a controlled manner with appropriate governance and oversight
Cross-Functional Coordination
Operate as senior connective tissue across functional departments at OPTrust while mobilizing different teams toward a shared “One Team - One Fund” vision
Partner with technology and data leadership to translate business requirements into an integrated delivery plan with agreed dependencies and resourcing
Perform other duties as assigned
What you bring
Bachelor's or Master's degree in a quantitative field such as Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
15+ years of progressive experience in investment management, portfolio strategy, or adjacent domains, including experience in both public and private markets
Senior leadership experience (MD, VP, or equivalent) leading investment platform modernization or operating model transformation within a complex institutional investment organization
Deep understanding of portfolio construction, risk management, and investment workflows across liquid and illiquid asset classes, with credibility to engage senior investment professionals as a peer
Demonstrated ability to translate strategic investment priorities into clear, executable roadmaps, balancing innovation, scalability, risk, and cost
Proven effectiveness in matrixed, influence-driven settings, including resolving enterprise-level prioritization decisions without direct line authority
Strong understanding of how emerging technologies, including AI and advanced analytics, can be applied to enhance investment decision making, with the judgment to distinguish high-value applications from hype
Experience leading enterprise change in complex professional environments where adoption depends on credibility, governance, and operating model design rather than directive authority
