Job Description

The primary responsibility of the Manager, System Engineer is to manage the direct and dotted line relationships to enable operational stability and uptime for server infrastructures, client hardware and software environments to manage and operate the environment in the most efficient manner.

The department operates technology systems across US and Canadian regions and the successful candidate will have to effectively collaborate with and support regional stakeholders in different time zones.

The systems that fall under this mandate have a direct relevance to how effectively the IoT and technology groups deliver a true and effective support for information and operational technology platforms.

The Manager will plan, design, and collaborate with functional leads to deliver all operational activities of the department as well as provide direction and support for IT solutions that enhance mission-critical business operations.

The successful candidate will work closely with decision makers within the department at-large and also with cross-functional departments to identify, recommend, develop, implement, and support cost-effective solutions for all aspects of the organizational needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Strategy & Planning

  • Collaborate with VP, Digital Building Solutions to formulate and deploy long-term strategic plans for operating a range of technology platforms.
  • Assist in the strategic planning process, including business requirements, project planning, and annual prioritization activities.
  • Develop supporting collateral to aid the team with making decisions that balance and prioritize current operational demands, disruptions, and opportunities with the longer-term strategic vision of the organization.
  • Provide input into the technology guidance, road maps, principles, standards, and best practices.
     

Operational Management

  • Provide ongoing operational support for all assigned systems – This is the most critical aspect of the mandate and will require ensuring that the wide range of technology systems are operating with efficiency and with minimal outages and service disruptions.
  • Identify gaps and where necessary, re-engineer infrastructure support to ensure it aligns with business requirements and strategic vision.
  • Collaborate with the relevant practice leads to identify and articulate project delivery milestones, service level agreements, and resource allocation to executive team, department leads, support staff, and end users.
  • Review performance of IT systems and vendors to determine operating costs, productivity levels, and articulate enhancement opportunities.
  • Report on and make recommendations for the improvement of the IT/IoT infrastructure and technology platforms in general.
  • Develop bid requirements for all hardware and software upgrades, review submitted bids for compliance with stated requirements, and makes the appropriate award.
  • Support the End User Services functional lead with the deployment, monitoring, maintenance, development, and support of all hardware and software based on department needs.
  • Oversee provision of end-user services, including help desk and technical support services.
  • Implement operational policies for operational uptime, security, disaster recovery, and service provision.
  • Establish and maintain regular written and in-person communications with the organization’s senior leaders, department heads, and end users regarding pertinent IT activities.
  • Additional responsibilities as deemed necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS

SERVICE / PERSONAL SKILLS: 

  • Good understanding and technical knowledge of current network and client operating systems, hardware, protocols, and standards, such as Windows OS, cloud platforms like O365 and Azure, HP hardware common desktop productivity software solutions.
  • Ability to apply IT in solving business problems.
  • Ability to present ideas in business-friendly and user-friendly language.
  • Self-motivated, self-directed, detail oriented with the ability to execute plans of action.
  • Extensive experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment.
  • Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrable experience in IT Operations and operational support.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing staff and influencing dotted line relationships and those without formal authority.

EDUCATION/DESIGNATIONS/LICENSES:

  • Bachelor’s degree, with 10 years of relevant work experience
  • Relevant IT certifications including from Microsoft, Cisco, Change Management, and ITIL.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing an IT operation.
