Our Team
Morningstar believes in empowering investors through research, data, design, and technology. Morningstar Direct (https://www.morningstar.com/products/direct) is Morningstar's flagship software product that helps Asset and Wealth Managers build and manage their portfolios and communicate with their clients. Our team is modernizing the core Direct product using web & desktop technologies, cloud-based infrastructure, and a refreshed product strategy. Our core offering is complemented by a variety of reporting, analytical, and artificial intelligence tools. We aim to provide a first-class experience in accessing, analyzing, and reporting on Morningstar research and data. We are deeply inquisitive; we do not take "that's just the way it's always been done" or "that's just best practice" as valid answers and instead seek to fine-tune our product development process for maximum impact. We are empowered professionals who are given problems to solve and not tickets to implement. We value team productivity over individual productivity and this culture of "giving" means we enjoy and highly value collaborating with our teammates.
About the Role
We are seeking a Manager of Software Engineering specializing in Front-End Development to lead and grow our front-end development team, focusing primarily on Vue.js. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in front-end architecture and design, a strong background in JavaScript frameworks, and proven leadership skills. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including Product, UX/UI, and Back-End Engineering, to deliver high-quality, scalable, and maintainable front-end applications.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Management:
    • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of full-stack engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
    • Provide technical guidance and direction, ensuring team members are aligned with business goals and best practices.
    • Manage the hiring process, onboarding, and professional development of team members.
    • Conduct regular performance reviews and establish clear career development plans.
  • Technical Oversight:
    • Oversee the architecture, development, and deployment of front-end applications, with a primary focus on Vue.js.
    • Collaborate with product managers and designers to create user-centric, efficient, and scalable solutions.
    • Define and enforce coding standards, development processes, and best practices for full-stack development, including code reviews and testing.
    • Work closely with back-end engineering teams to ensure seamless integration between front-end and back-end services.
    • Ensure applications are optimized for performance, security, and accessibility.
  • Project Management & Delivery:
    • Plan and execute front-end development projects, ensuring timely delivery within scope and budget.
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to gather requirements, estimate project timelines, and manage resources effectively.
    • Lead the development team through agile development cycles, focusing on continuous improvement, rapid iteration, and quality delivery.
    • Identify and mitigate potential risks and bottlenecks throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications:

  • Experience:
    • 5+ years of experience in full-stack development, with a strong focus on modern JavaScript frameworks (preferably Vue.js).
    • 2+ years of experience in a leadership role, managing engineers and overseeing technical projects.
    • Experience working with RESTful APIs, GraphQL, and state management libraries (Vuex, Pinia).
    • Proven experience delivering large-scale, high-performance web applications.
    • Hands-on experience with modern development tools and practices, including version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and agile methodologies.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in Vue.js and related libraries (Vue Router, Vuex/Pinia, etc.).
    • Proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, and modern JavaScript/ES6+.
    • Experience with front-end build tools and bundlers like Webpack, Vite, or similar.
    • Knowledge of responsive design principles and experience with CSS preprocessors (SASS, LESS) and frameworks (Tailwind, Bootstrap).
    • Familiarity with modern development tools such as ESLint, Prettier, and TypeScript is a plus.
    • Knowledge of cross-browser compatibility issues and solutions.
  • Soft Skills:
    • Strong communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.
    • Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
    • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and projects simultaneously.
    • Ability to foster a collaborative team environment and inspire high performance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with TypeScript in Vue.js applications.
  • Familiarity with component-driven development and design systems.
  • Knowledge of back-end technologies (Node.js, Ruby on Rails, etc.).
  • Experience working in an agile or scrum-based environment.
