The Manager, Software Engineering leads a delivery pod with accountability for both technical excellence and team health. This role owns the architectural integrity of the pod's solutions, removes engineering blockers, and ensures delivery meets quality and timeline commitments — while holding the pod to AltaML's AI-first standard for how fast and how well work gets done. The Manager is equally responsible for growing a high-performing team and maintaining the trust of clients and internal stakeholders through transparent, reliable execution.
What You'll Do:
Guide the pod on architectural decisions, set technical direction, and ensure solutions are robust, scalable, and aligned with company standards.
Ensure the pod treats Claude Code and AltaML's shared CLAUDE.md/skills library as the default way of working, and hold delivery expectations to the AI-first standard — weeks compressed to days, days to hours — rather than pre-AI baselines.
Remove engineering blockers and facilitate cross-functional technical discussions to keep delivery on track.
Partner with the delivery team (PM, PdM, EBP, Program Manager) to ensure on-time, on-scope delivery across all active projects.
Lead or actively participate in cross-pod technical guilds (e.g., Frontend, AI/ML, DevOps).
Run regular 1:1s with direct reports focused on career growth, performance, and wellbeing.
Provide timely, constructive feedback and support individual development plans.
Foster an inclusive, psychologically safe team environment where engineers can do their best work.
Ensure models and systems are explainable, fair, and auditable throughout the solution lifecycle.
Uphold and champion AltaML's Responsible AI (RAI) guidelines and development best practices across the pod.
Manage end-to-end solution quality in partnership with the pod lead, from design through deployment.
Communicate pod progress, risks, and outcomes clearly to internal stakeholders and external clients.
Maintain a strong comms loop with the delivery team to keep project requirements aligned.
Support pre-sales and business development by providing low-level solution architecture, demos, and technical Q&A on calls.
Conduct hiring interviews and contribute to candidate assessment for engineering roles — evaluating for AI-first fluency specifically: ask candidates to show, not just describe, their AI-assisted coding.
Assist with quarterly resource allocation planning across the pod.

What You Bring:
5+ years of software engineering experience, including at least 2 years in a technical lead or management role.
Fluent, hands-on use of AI coding tools (Claude Code or equivalent), and the ability to set — not just permit — that expectation for the pod.
Demonstrated ability to drive architectural decisions and maintain engineering quality in a fast-paced delivery environment.
Experience managing and growing engineers across different levels.
Comfortable engaging directly with clients and stakeholders — you can translate technical complexity into clear, confident communication.
Familiarity with AI/ML solutions and modern MLOps or software delivery practices.
A track record of championing responsible, ethical AI and inclusive team culture.
Nice to Have
Experience leading technical guilds or communities of practice.
Background in pre-sales or solution architecture support.
Familiarity with AltaML's delivery methodology or similar agile consulting environments.
