Canadian Finance’s Expense Management team is a high-performing group, who are key business partners providing financial advice and support to Canada’s Business Units, Enablement Functions, Technology and Corporate teams. This team is accountable for Canada’s expense planning, budgeting, forecasting, reporting and analysis to drive expense management across Sun Life Canada and support strategic decisions. 

Reporting to the Director, Expense Management, this role is accountable for end-to-end Planning and Budgeting across Sun Life Canada, including optimizing the budget framework, managing the Canada wide budget process, developing budget templates, collaborating with partners to address budget queries and consolidating budgets with data driven insights and enhanced reporting.

The Manager will play a leadership role in driving a disciplined, efficient, and scalable planning process, while enhancing transparency, insights, and decision support for senior leadership. In addition, this role will support the transformation of expense management in Canada through evolving reporting, elevating relevant insights and developing new frameworks, metrics and dashboards.

Through extensive involvement with Canada’s Business Units, Enablement Functions, Technology and Corporate teams, the individual will develop a broad knowledge of all areas, financial and business drivers, and key performance indicators within Sun Life Canada. This position is also responsible for fostering and building a positive, engaging and inclusive team environment, that proactively anticipates business needs and recommends new opportunities and/or enhancements.

What will you do?

  • Lead the end-to-end annual planning and budgeting process, including stakeholder alignment across Business Units, Enablement Functions, Corporate and Canada’s Planning teams

  • Develop and maintain planning and budget templates and frameworks to enable consistent, accurate, and efficient inputs

  • Drive consolidation of total Canada expense plan and budget, including analysis of key drivers, variances, and recommendations

  • Partner closely with Business Units and Enablement Functions to enhance financial discipline

  • Deliver clear, concise executive-level messaging on plan outcomes, risks, and opportunities

  • Identify and implement process improvements and automation opportunities to enhance efficiency

  • Support Canada expense planning and budgeting initiatives and other expense initiatives

We are looking for someone with:

  • Accounting designation (CPA, CMA, CA, or CGA)

  • Proven experience in financial planning and budgeting within complex organizations

  • Strong analytical skills with deep understanding of expense drivers and unit costs

  • Excellent business partnering and stakeholder influence skills

  • Demonstrated ability to manage ambiguity and drive alignment across multiple teams

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex concepts into clear executive messaging

  • Results-oriented self-starter with high ownership and sense of urgency; able to work with minimal supervision

  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to continuous improvement

Preferred skills:

  • 5+ years of insurance and/or financial industry experience with direct planning and budgeting involvement

  • Experience with financial planning, budgeting, reporting, forecasting, and analysis

  • Proficiency with financial tools (e.g., Hyperion, SAP, Tableau, Workiva, Longview)

  • Demonstrated experience in process automation or workflow optimization

  • Experience presenting to senior leadership

    The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
