Founded in 1957, AGF Management Limited (AGF) is an independent and globally diverse asset management firm. Our companies deliver excellence in investing in the public and private markets through three distinct business lines: AGF Investments, AGF Capital Partners and AGF Private Wealth. AGF brings a disciplined approach, focused on incorporating sound, responsible and sustainable corporate practices. The firm’s collective investment expertise, driven by its fundamental, quantitative and private investing capabilities, extends globally to a wide range of clients, from financial advisors and their clients to high-net worth and institutional investors including pension plans, corporate plans, sovereign wealth funds, endowments and foundations.

About AGF Capital Partners:

The AGF Capital Partners team is responsible for building a diversified alternatives business, focused on significant growth opportunities in the private equity, real assets, private credit, and liquid alternative sectors. Building on AGF’s existing alternatives and private markets experience, the team is tasked with developing and implementing a long-term strategic plan to build a multi-boutique alternatives business that will stand alongside AGF’s public markets business and expand the breadth of offerings and value proposition to our clients.

A small team, designed to be nimble and forward thinking, we operate with a flat structure and shared responsibility, with each team member working across a range of tasks and leveraging AGF’s breadth of resources on behalf of our affiliate managers.

AGF Capital Partners multi-boutique structure currently serves three affiliates:

  • Kensington Capital Partners, a Toronto based mid-market private equity and venture capital asset manager with $2.6 billion of assets under management.
  • New Holland Capital, a New York based multi-strategy, absolute return asset manager with US$5.5 billion of assets under management.
  • AGF | SAF Private Credit Management, a joint venture with SAF Group, a Calgary based private credit manager, focused on mid-market direct lending in Canada.

AGF Capital Partners’ affiliate managers collectively manage approximately $12B in AUM across private equity, private credit, venture capital and hedge fund strategies.

About the Role:

Working out of AGF’s corporate head office in Toronto and reporting to the Vice-President, Associate General Counsel, you will primarily support the growth of the AGF Capital Partners’ business, together with providing auxiliary legal and risk management support across AGF’s business.

Your Responsibilities:

  • Working with the AGF Capital Partners’ management team, provide legal advice and support on issues affecting AGF Capital Partners and its affiliate manager businesses, including:
    • Draft, review and negotiate a broad range of agreements and other legal documents.
    • Assist with securities regulatory compliance and governance matters.
    • Collaborate with internal teams and affiliate managers to manage legal risks and resolve legal issues.
    • Support growth initiatives, including affiliate manager acquisitions and strategic investments.
  • Provide supplementary legal advice and support across various aspects of AGF’s business and operations.

Your Qualifications/Competencies:

  • Law degree; Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • A legal counsel with 5 to 7 years post-call experience in corporate law gained either/both at a leading law firm or asset management/financial services corporation.
  • Strong background and understanding of corporate and contract law.
  • Experience in private capital and/or alternative strategies would be an asset.
  • Some experience with M&A transactions would also be an asset.
  • Excellent drafting, editing and writing skills with very close attention to detail.
  • Must be independent, organized and detail-oriented, and possess highly developed business problem-solving skills.
  • An ability to multi-task, take initiative and interact effectively with stakeholders at different levels in and outside the organization will be essential.
