Position Overview:

As Legal Counsel, you will play a pivotal role in shaping our legal framework and supporting our business as we scale. This position provides an exciting opportunity for a legal professional who is not only equipped with expertise in employment law but also eager to drive strategic initiatives that align legal considerations with business goals. You will be a trusted partner to various business units, ensuring that legal risks are identified and managed effectively while enabling business agility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Employment Counsel: Advise on key employment matters, including workforce planning, talent acquisition, workplace policies, end of employment, investigations, ensuring compliance with Ontario and other applicable employment laws. You will also contribute to shaping the company’s employment strategy to attract, retain, and develop top talent.  Manage outside counsel and resources effectively for specific engagements.
  • Commercial Counsel: Draft, negotiate, and review complex commercial contracts, in particular software agreements, with a focus on maximizing business outcomes while minimizing risk. You will be expected to proactively anticipate contract-related risks and provide practical solutions to support business initiatives.
  • Regulatory Compliance & Legal Advisory: Stay ahead of evolving legal regulations, particularly in employment law, and deliver insights to ensure our company remains compliant. You will regularly provide senior leadership with actionable legal advice that informs broader business strategies.
  • Risk Mitigation & Dispute Resolution: Collaborate with internal stakeholders to anticipate potential legal challenges, mitigate risks, and support dispute resolution strategies in alignment with the company's risk tolerance and objectives.
  • Cross-functional Partnership: Act as a key legal partner to HR, Finance, Operations, and other departments, providing legal advice that is not only accurate but strategically aligned with the company’s growth and operational goals.

Qualifications:

  • Licensed Professional: Called to the Ontario Bar and licensed to practice law in Ontario.
  • Relevant Expertise: 2-4 years of post-call experience with a focus on employment law, gained either in-house or through a law firm.  Experience drafting and negotiating commercial and/or software agreements is beneficial but not required.
  • Business-Minded Legal Expertise: Proven ability to balance legal risk with business opportunity, particularly in the context of employment practices and commercial agreements.
  • Problem-Solver: Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to provide pragmatic, actionable advice that considers both legal risks and business objectives.
  • Collaborative Communicator: Exceptional communication and negotiation skills, with the ability to distill complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance for non-legal stakeholders.
  • Organized & Detail-Oriented: Superior organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize effectively, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • High Integrity & Discretion: Demonstrated ethical judgment and professionalism when handling sensitive and confidential information.
