What is the Legal group responsible for?

The Legal team provides practical legal advice and service to the broader organization by reviewing and analyzing the laws and regulations of the legal jurisdictions in which Franklin Templeton operates. Our in-house lawyers interpret these laws and regulations and advise the business on actions required to comply with legal and regulatory obligations.  They also guide the business on appropriate courses of action to minimize risk from financial or reputational loss.

What is the Legal Counsel responsible for?

The Americas Legal Counsel supports the Franklin Templeton investment management business in Canada and Latin America with responsibility for fund distribution, transactions, special projects, as well as general oversight of our operations in Argentina, Bahamas, Chile, Colombia, Peru and Uruguay. This individual will report to the Senior Associate General Counsel and will be part of the Americas Legal Team.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of a Legal Counsel?
  • Directly advising senior business partners and sales professionals on key strategic initiatives in the region.

  • Drafting/negotiating distribution, investment management and subscription agreements with institutional clients and external parties.

  • Providing advice on legal and regulatory issues related to: (i) the distribution and marketing of our Luxembourg and Irish funds and investment services in the Americas region; and (ii) Franklin Templeton Canada’s business.

  • Supporting product development activities, including the launch of alternative and private funds.

  • Providing advice on regulatory issues, governance, compliance with KYC, employment and litigation matters as needed in the region.

  • Managing and coordinating local outside counsel on a variety of corporate, securities, employment, real estate and other matters. 

What ideal qualifications, skills & experience would help someone to be successful?
  • Law degree, member in good standing of a provincial Bar.

  • 6 – 8 years of relevant experience, gained at a leading law firm, large company or financial institution.

  • Knowledge of the regulatory framework for distribution of offshore funds and investment management.

  • Cross-border or international experience, preferably with experience in Latin America, especially Argentina and Chile.

  • Strong problem-solving, negotiation, communication and client management skills.

  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and operate independently in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent judgment and the ability to provide practical advice and escalate issues when appropriate.

  • Ability to collaborate with clients, colleagues and business partners at all levels, including senior management.

  • Spanish fluency (read and speak) is a strong plus.
