Claims Counsel are lawyers who are responsible for investigating and handling more complex claims to resolution. As a member of the Legal Department, your work will focus on providing direction to Claims Handlers on less complex claims, reviewing denials and handling more complex claims. Your input will be sought as we rely on our claims experience to shape our underwriting decisions and product explorations.

HERE’S HOW YOU’LL CONTRIBUTE:

  • Investigate, evaluate, determine loss and defense coverage liability and resolve complex claim files
  • Determine need to retain outside counsel and instruct outside counsel on claim files
  • Manage claims and/or litigation through to final resolution. Including negotiating with claimant / opposing counsel / third parties for resolution.
  • Attend mediations and other required court appearances / processes Direct supervision of claims files being handled by other Claims Handlers
  • As the Claims subject matter expert, provide guidance to our Claims Handlers
  • Monitoring of claim files to identify trends which highlight a need for a change in policy or procedure, or which may impact the company on a larger scale
  • Review and approve denials from Claims Handlers

HERE’S WHAT YOU’LL BRING:  

  • Call to the Bar of at least one Canadian Province or Territory and in good standing
  • LLB or JD
  • 3-8 years professional experience in commercial and residential real estate
  • Bilingual (French/English) preferred, but not required
  • Possesses and applies a broad knowledge of principles, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization to the completion of complex files
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and organizational skills
  • Ability to exercise independent judgement, innovation and initiative
  • Ability to multi-task and adhere to numerous concurrent deadlines
