Position Summary:
The Associate Director, Canadian Indirect Tax Compliance & Planning will lead the development, implementation, and management of the Company's Canadian indirect tax function, supporting its motor vehicle leasing and related service operations. This position will establish a scalable compliance framework, implement indirect tax technology solutions, and ensure accurate tax determination, collection, reporting, and remittance across all Canadian jurisdictions while providing strategic tax guidance to business stakeholders.
Serving as the subject matter expert for GST/HST, PST, QST, provincial fees and taxes, and vehicle-related transaction taxes, the successful candidate will oversee the indirect tax implications of leasing activities, asset dispositions, dealer programs, servicing operations, and customer transactions. This position will design processes and controls that support a growing portfolio, optimize the company’s tax positions, and minimize compliance and audit risk through automation and standardization
The ideal candidate will be comfortable operating as both a strategic leader and a hands-on builder, capable of building a Canadian indirect tax function from the ground up while partnering effectively across Finance, Operations, IT, and executive leadership.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead implementation of Canadian indirect tax functionality within leasing and servicing systems.
  • Configure and validate tax engines, rate tables, jurisdictional assignments, and exemption processes
  • Build and implement a comprehensive end-to-end Canadian indirect tax compliance framework.
  • Lead all indirect tax compliance activities for Canadian leasing operations, including GST/HST, QST, PST and other applicable provincial taxes.
  • Manage the preparation, review, and filing of indirect tax returns and related remittances.
  • Develop compliance calendars, control matrices, and monitoring tools.
  • Ensure proper taxation of lease originations, lease payments, lease terminations, vehicle buyouts, early terminations, repossessions, and vehicle dispositions.
  • Oversee tax treatment of dealer incentives, servicing fees, ancillary products, and administrative charges.
  • Monitor legislative and regulatory changes impacting vehicle leasing and financing activities and implement required process changes.
  • Manage tax audits, assessments, and inquiries from federal and provincial tax authorities.
  • Develop reconciliation processes between source systems, tax returns, and general ledger accounts.
  • Serve as the primary Canadian indirect tax resource for Finance, Accounting, Operations, Legal, Treasury, Dealer Relations, and Compliance teams.
  • Support future growth of the Canadian indirect tax function, including process documentation and resource planning.

Required Experience:

  • Minimum eight (8) years’ experience in GST/HST.
  • Minimum eight (8) years’ tax audit and/or equivalent experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Canadian GST/HST, PST, QST and provincial tax regulations.
  • Experience within automotive finance, vehicle leasing, financial services, transportation, or a comparable highly regulated industry.
  • Demonstrated success implementing ERP, tax engine, billing, or financial systems.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite of programs.
  • Display strong effective analytical skills and reasoning.
  • Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multitask effectively.
  • Effective written and oral communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Capable of managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines, including the ability to coordinate and balance numerous tasks in a time-sensitive fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrate strong problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to identify issues and generate creative solutions.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. Overtime required – as required on an as needed basis. Travel 0-10% - as required on an as needed basis.

Must have reliable transportation and live within a commutable distance to one of the following cities: Atlanta, GA; Dallas, TX; Detroit, MI; Houston, TX; Phoenix, AZ.

Qualifications Preferred:

  • Knowledge of tax automation solutions such as Avalara, Vertex, SAP Tax, OneSource, or similar platforms.
  • Experience building compliance processes and control frameworks from the ground up.

Work Schedule

Ability to work between the hours of 8AM-6PM Monday through Friday and weekends as needed.

This position is for an existing vacancy.

The salary range for this role is $135,000 - $185,000 per year.
