Waymo is an autonomous driving technology company with the mission to be the most trusted driver. Since its start as the Google Self-Driving Car Project in 2009, Waymo has focused on building the Waymo Driver—The World's Most Experienced Driver™—to improve access to mobility while saving thousands of lives now lost to traffic crashes. The Waymo Driver powers Waymo One, a fully autonomous ride-hailing service, and can also be applied to a range of vehicle platforms and product use cases. The Waymo Driver has provided over one million rider-only trips, enabled by its experience autonomously driving tens of millions of miles on public roads and tens of billions in simulation across 13+ U.S. states.

Waymo's Product Management Team is a mission-driven team responsible for writing and enacting first-of-their-kind playbooks to bring fully autonomous driving technology to market. Our team develops simple solutions for complex problems by orchestrating cross-functional efforts to safely drive Waymo's technology and the products it enables forward. We do this by understanding the customer, the business, and the technology. We are humble about the scope of our work, collaborative in our approach to problem-solving, and ambitious about our vision for the future.

This role is on the Simulation Evaluation Team reporting to our Director, Product Management for Simulation, Evaluation, and Safety. Our mission is to provide a universally useful and trusted platform for self-driving car evaluation, hillclimbing, and model training that's powered by the world's easiest to use, most reliable, most realistic, and fastest simulator.

In this role you'll:

  • Manage a team. You'll be responsible for the strategy, team goals, and developing your team as we drive short term and long term technical vision of the organization
  • Evolve the Release Process and Safety Framework. We are constantly improving how we release software with an eye always towards safety. You'll be responsible for the evolution of the safety framework and release process, improvements to our eval methodologies supporting that process, and understanding needed modifications for new driving contexts and scope
  • Contribute to accelerating market expansion. How do we enable a step change reduction in the cost and time to enter new markets? What new sim capabilities are required?
  • Build our Simulator evaluation capabilities. How do we evaluate a simulator for AVs, especially how well it predicts real world self-driving car performance. How do we validate that the simulator supports new scopes?
  • Realistic vehicle simulation. How do we ensure that autonomous cars in simulation behave just like they do in the real world, all the good and the bad

At a minimum we'd like you to have:

  • 3+ years of managing a Product team
  • Background in an engineering discipline, either hardware or software, could be undergrad degree or work equivalent
  • Business experience could be one or more of: (1) startup founder, (2) successful sales or sales engineering work, or (3) management consulting or finance
  • Strong analytical and presentation skills, including data analysis and telling compelling stories w/ data

It's preferred if you have:

  • Quantitative analysis background
  • Familiarity with Machine Learning
  • Experience in robotics or autonomous vehicles specifically
  • Experience with simulation
