About The Role


Reporting to the Director of Business Operations and Strategy, the Financial Controller sits on the Business Operations Team and will work directly with the Leadership Team and COO. You will be responsible for managing and overseeing all aspects of the company’s financial activities, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and financial planning and analysis. There will also be the opportunity for analytical and strategic projects as capacity allows. This role will be collaborative and require a deep understanding of Baselane’s business and each function within the company.


As the first internal controller at Baselane, you will have the opportunity to truly shape our processes for accounting, tax and reporting. You will always be on the lookout for ways to improve Baselane’s efficiency and save costs. You are also energized by tackling new challenges, such as assessing a new product launches’ impact on US state-level sales tax implications or evaluating strategies to maximize Canadian SR&ED credits. Please note that this is a hybrid role that will require at least 2 days a week in our downtown Toronto office a few blocks from Union Station.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Execute and review the full-cycle accounting duties for Baselane
  • Report accurate, timely financial statements internally and to stakeholders
  • Review and assess current accounting practices and systems, and recommend/implement improvements to internal controls and business processes
  • Conduct internal monthly reviews of budgets by department, working with functional leaders to ensure accurate forecasting
  • Monitor and manage cash flows, driving high internal visibility as well as maximization of yield on deposits
  • Manage the accounting functions including AP, AR, expense reconciliation, and the maintenance of the general ledger
  • Review quarterly sales tax remittances; ensure compliance with sales tax requirements and reporting
  • Assist the Operations Director and Executive team with Board and Investor Presentations
  • Tracking of KPIs around operational performance and assistance in OKR monitoring
  • Audit and tax filings, as well as information gathering for grants and subsidies
  • Ad-hoc analysis as required to support strategic initiatives

What We're Looking For

  • Familiarity with accounting and payroll software (Quickbooks required; Ramp, Justworks, Wagepoint are preferred)
  • 4+ years experience in audit, accounting, tax, or a similar field
  • Understanding of Canadian and United States accounting standards, inter-company reporting, requirements, and taxes
  • A hardworking, ambitious individual interested in maximizing their personal development
  • Strong background in developing and implementing processes, procedures and operational controls
  • High proficiency in modeling (Google Sheets will be used)
  • CPA license required
  • Experience with FinTech business models and Venture Capital is bonus
