The Role
Android Developer Experience builds all necessary infrastructure and tools to ensure Block's Android development can continue to be fast and efficient at scale. This is a high force multiplier team aiming to enhance the developer experience for all Android developers at Block. Our focus is on improving both the local IDE and CI experience when working within our massive and modularized monorepo codebase. You will lead a team of senior engineers responsible for our entire development stack (build system, build tools, IDE, CI platform).
The team works to accelerate our delivery of a fast and efficient developer experience with our cross functional partners at Gradle, Google, and Jetbrains. They identify important performance bottlenecks in the development experience including the build system, IDE integrations, testing frameworks, pull request workflows, and amplifies the efficiency of our mobile developers to develop, test, and release apps to our end customers.
You Will

  • Manage an outstanding team of experienced and passionate engineers.
  • Grow the team by hiring and developing engineers, promoting engineering decisions, and applying your technical and managerial expertise to constantly raise the bar.
  • Establish the technical direction for the team and lead the team to achieve it.
  • Collaborate across the broader Developer Experience team to provide a fast, easy, safe and consistent developer ecosystem for all engineers at Square.
  • Shape, schedule & document team's work to ensure successful project execution.
  • Participate in technical, design, and product discussions with teams across the organization.


You Have

  • A computer science or engineering undergraduate degree or equivalent experience, including software development experience.
  • 2+ years of experience managing, recruiting, and retaining engineering talent and growing teams.
  • First hand experience building apps for Android.
  • Preferably experience with
    • Knowledge of build systems (Gradle/Bazel).
    • Experience supporting build or CI systems infrastructure at scale.

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate's starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.
