About Brim

Brim Financial is a category defining fintech, building the operating system for credit cards and payments. Our platform powers card programs for banks, credit unions, fintechs, and global brands across North America. We are a fast-growing company. We are backed by EDC Growth Equity, Epic Ventures, Vistara Growth, and Impression Ventures and have been recognized as a CB Insights Fintech 100 company and Deloitte Fast 50 and Deloitte Fast 500 winners.

The Director, Payments Compliance & Regulatory Affairs is responsible for building, maintaining, and continuously improving Brim's regulatory compliance program across its payments, card issuing, and fund safeguarding activities. Reporting into Brim's compliance leadership, this role ensures Brim's platform and card programs meet all applicable Canadian regulatory requirements, including the Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA), anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CTF) obligations, and card network rules - while helping the business move quickly and confidently as it scales. This is a hands-on individual contributor role that directly contributes to day-to-day business priorities while helping shape and drive the overall strategy.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented compliance professional who thrives at the intersection of regulation, technology, and financial services, and who wants to help build and operationalize a compliance function from the ground up at a fast-scaling fintech.

Who You Are
  • You have 6+ years of experience in financial services, fintech, or payments compliance and regulatory affairs, ideally touching card issuing, prepaid products, or money services businesses.

  • You have working experience with Canadian payments regulation (RPAA/RPAR) and AML/CTF requirements under the PCMLTFA, or a demonstrated ability to get up to speed quickly on specialized regulatory frameworks.

  • You're comfortable reading and interpreting legislation, card network rules, and legal agreements, and translating them into practical, operational policies that a cross-functional team can actually follow.

  • You're a clear communicator who can explain complex regulatory requirements to non-compliance colleagues in product, engineering, and finance.

  • You have a bias toward building durable, well-documented processes — not just checking boxes.

What You'll Do
  • Maintain and continuously improve Brim's regulatory compliance framework, including policies related to the safeguarding of end-user funds under the RPAA and RPAR.

  • Monitor and interpret changes to applicable regulations (RPAA, AML/CTF, provincial consumer protection, card network rules) and translate them into updated internal policy and procedure.

  • Support Brim's RPAA Senior Officer with required Bank of Canada filings, annual reports, and incident notifications, while interpreting and operationalizing Payments Canada by-laws, rules, standards and notices that affect Brim’s card payment flows: ACSS for pre-authorized debits and card repayments, Lynx, and RTR.

  • Review and advise on cardholder agreements, disclosures, and fee structures for compliance with Canadian consumer protection and disclosure requirements.

  • Managing relationships with regulators, card networks and Payments Canada, and responding to consultations and support joint discovery efforts.

  • Partner with Legal, Risk, and outside counsel on regulatory inquiries, card network compliance matters, and new product launches.

  • Support due diligence requests from clients, investors, and banking partners regarding Brim's compliance posture.

  • Maintain the compliance training program and ensure company-wide awareness of key regulatory obligations.

  • Monitor the effectiveness of Brim's AML/CTF program, including transaction monitoring and regulatory reporting obligations.

  • Manage the annual network (Visa and Mastercard) compliance attestations, network registrations, BIN and licence obligations, and the network compliance calendar.

  • Maintain records of regulatory obligations, regulatory changes and incidences in Canada and the U.S., and support privacy-related cases reporting to regulators.

  • Run a compliance monitoring and testing plan, with key risk indicators and reporting to compliance committees and the Board.

  • Sign off new products and changes from a compliance standpoint.

What You'll Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in business, law, finance, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience).

  • 6+ years in compliance and regulatory affairs or risk within financial services, fintech, or payments.

  • Working experience with the Retail Payment Activities Act (RPAA) and Retail Payment Activities Regulations (RPAR), or a comparable payments regulatory framework.

  • Strong analytical and written communication skills, with the ability to draft clear, actionable policies and procedures.

  • Ability to manage multiple regulatory workstreams and deadlines independently, in a fast-paced environment.

Bonus if you have
  • A compliance certification (e.g., CAMS, ICA, CRCM) or progress toward one.

  • Prior experience working directly with the Bank of Canada, OSFI, or a similar regulator.

  • Experience supporting board or investor reporting on compliance matters.

  • Familiarity with U.S. payments regulation (e.g., money transmitter licensing, Regulation Z) as Brim expands cross-border.

  • Experience with Operational Risk Management (ORM), including risk assessments, control testing, incident management, and risk reporting.

What We Offer
  • Competitive compensation and equity.

  • Remote-first workplace (Eastern Time).

  • Comprehensive health plan and PTO.

  • A team that treats AI as a force multiplier, not a threat.

  • Real ownership - you'll shape the processes and standards that drive how we deliver customer value.

Other Information
  • Remote (Eastern time zone)

  • Compensation: CA $150,000 - $200,000.

  • Base salary range: For this role, candidates can expect a base salary range, described in the posting. Actual compensation is determined based on skills, experience, and role level. Exceptional candidates may be considered above the top of the range, and pay increases for those who make a big impact in the role.

  • Vacancy status: Not a backfill.

  • Direct reports: None
