Who We Are
SWTCH is pioneering EV charging solutions for multifamily and commercial properties across North America. Since 2016, our team of entrepreneurs, energy professionals, and technologists has been focused on unlocking the social, economic, and environmental benefits of widespread EV adoption. Today, our solutions are deployed in tens of thousands of locations —many of which are low-to-moderate income housing—helping to make clean mobility accessible for all.
With an expanding footprint across Canada and the U.S., we’re scaling quickly and looking for mission-driven talent to help accelerate our growth.
Job Opportunity
We are seeking a Director of Engineering who is as comfortable in the codebase as they are in leadership meetings or 1-on-1 coaching sessions. This is a pivotal role for a proactive leader who wants to bridge the gap between high-level product vision and technical execution. You will be the architect of our engineering culture, ensuring our systems are scalable and our teams are high-performing.
Key Responsibilities
1. Hands-On Technical Implementation
- Architecture & Strategy: Define the long-term technical roadmap and stack strategy to ensure our platform can handle rapid scaling.
- Security & DevOps: Oversee DevOps practices and security protocols to maintain the integrity of our charging network.
- Lead by Doing: Jump into the code and architecture when necessary to unblock the team or set technical standards.
2. People Management & Leadership
- Coaching & Mentorship: Build a culture of excellence by mentoring engineering managers and individual contributors.
- Culture Carrier: Foster an environment of psychological safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
3. Project Delivery & Execution
- Operational Excellence: Own the engineering operating model. You will track and optimize metrics such as delivery predictability, code quality, system reliability, and velocity.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with Product and Operations to ensure technical feasibility and timely delivery.
- Production Stability: Take full ownership of incident management, postmortems, and system uptime.
What Success Looks Like
- Reliable Delivery: Your team consistently hits sprint goals and quarterly roadmap commitments with minimal friction.
- High Standards: Releases are high-quality, stable, and scalable, with a measurable reduction in bugs over time.
- Resilient Organization: You’ve built a high-performing team with clear ownership, strong middle management, and reduced "bus factor" (dependency on specific individuals).
- Radical Transparency: You provide clear visibility into engineering metrics, making success (and areas for improvement) measurable for the entire executive team.
Qualifications
- Experience: 8+ years in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in a senior leadership role (Director or Head of Engineering) in a high-growth startup environment.
- Technical Depth: Proven expertise in modern cloud architecture, DevOps, and managing complex distributed systems.
- Problem Solver: A track record of stabilizing production environments and scaling infrastructure.
- Communication: Exceptional ability to translate complex technical concepts into business outcomes for non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to work from our Etobicoke office at least 2 days per week.
- Mission-Driven: A genuine passion for renewable energy and the EV transition.
