Job Description:

About the role

The role is responsible for the Canadian tax financial reporting and analysis for certain Canadian companies, including tax provisioning, adjusted cost base/surplus calculations and foreign affiliate reporting.

What you'll be doing

• Responsible for Canadian tax financial reporting, analysis and tax filings for certain Canadian companies, partnerships, and other passthrough entities, including foreign affiliate reporting and ACB/surplus tracking

• Responsible for the accurate and timely determination of quarterly Canadian income tax provisions under IFRS

• Assisting with annual and quarterly plans and forecasts and quarterly results review meetings

• Assisting with oversight of outsourcing and secondment arrangements

• Assist with government income tax audits and preparation of formal responses to audit queries

• Tax research and interpretation of the impact of specific issues and/or transactions

• Provide consultation and tax advice to business unit management/corporate functions

• Assisting with Global Tax Advisory projects implementation

Decision Making

Decisions are based on consultations with the AVP, Canadian Tax Operations , other Sun Life tax staff, and external tax advisors.

• Provide input on courses of action relating to Canadian tax matters and recommend to tax leadership

• Provide input on policies and procedures for Canadian tax matters and initiatives

• Decisions relating to tax automation and outsourcing projects and initiatives.

Key Relationships

Internal Relationships:

• Technical resources in the tax group

• Other global functional areas within Sun Life Financial

• Relationship with Corporate/Canadian finance and business groups

• Technology colleagues and teams.

External Relationships:

• External tax advisors – coordinate client entity tax preparation / review and confirm conclusions on more complex tax issues

• Tax authorities – timely responses to requests/queries/audits where necessary

• Canadian industry associations

Organizational Impact

• This role has responsibility for Canadian tax compliance and reporting for activities in Canada as well as tax reporting for Sun Life's foreign affiliates.

What you'll need to succeed

• CPA accounting designation.

• Completion of the CICA/CPA Canada In-depth Tax Course or Master of Taxation program.

• Strong knowledge of Canadian tax financial reporting for corporate non-corporate legal entities (such as partnership and trusts)

• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are critical

• Familiarity with foreign affiliate reporting is an asset

• Understanding investment management business is an asset

• Excellent oral and written communication skills - able to communicate technical information

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with a detail-oriented mindset

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted.  It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors.  In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.  Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
