Job Description

The Toronto Star is seeking a Digital Producer who thrives on speed, creativity, and innovation to join its newsroom. This role is at the centre of how audiences experience our journalism — whether through newsletters, in conversations with readers on commenting threads or in a live rolling file.

As part of the digital team, you’ll experiment with new ways of connecting with our community through newsletters, commenting and social media. You will help shape stories and package them for maximum impact. We’re looking for someone who works well within the urgency of a live news environment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate sound editorial judgment, command of digital publishing systems, and fluency in the latest tools and techniques of audience engagement, which can include newsletters and platforms such as X, Reddit, and Blue Sky. As part of this role, the candidate will be entrusted with engaging readers in real-time, managing communities and curating our home pages.

The digital desk operates 24/7. Early morning, late evening, and weekend work will be required.

What You’ll Do

  • Shape the homepage: Curate and edit the lineups on thestar.com and our apps.
  • Tell stories creatively: Produce packages that use visuals, multimedia, and social to grab readers’ attention.
  • Run live coverage: Take charge of rolling files, keeping coverage sharp and timely.
  • Spark engagement: Curate and moderate reader commenting and deliver journalism directly to inboxes with newsletters and alerts.
  • Lead on social: Manage the Star’s social feeds, tailoring stories for each platform, responding in real time to audience behaviour, and experimenting with new formats.
  • Work with data: Use analytics, SEO, and platform insights to shape coverage and track success.
