General Description:

Support Machine Shop Manager with all duties related to managing a dynamic team of experienced union machinists. The goal of the Machine Shop is to produce high quality parts and assemblies on- time and as ordered, utilizing procedures, metrics, continuous improvement, and other business tools as necessary to meet HRL’s business needs. 


Supervisory Responsibilities:

Position is secondary manager to the Manager, Machine Shop for all union Machine Shop personnel


Essential Duties:

Assist in the management of Machine Shop staff

Constant job estimating and estimation of shop’s resources requirements

Prioritize, schedule, and assign jobs in cooperation with Queue Manager

Manage jobs capacity and resources to meet HRL needs

Oversee jobs inspection process and documentation

Manage tooling, material inventory, and supplies

Develop and document procedures and work instructions

Interact with customers for engineering support, delivery dates, and job updates

Oversee shop organization, safety, and preventive maintenance

Utilize metrics to support customer needs and make business decisions

Improve efficiency through continuous improvement and LEAN practices

Strategic planning to support Machine Shop and HRL needs

Assist in managing department budget

Report and analyze Machine Shop performance and metrics

Any other job responsibilities as required or assigned


Required Skills:

7+ years of experience as a machinist and programming

3+ years of experience managing machinists

Experience managing staffing, resources, budgets, inventory, equipment, schedule, and capacity

Strong organizational and administrative skills to manage on-time delivery of complex prototype parts and assemblies

Experience working with union employees preferred

Must have good verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills with staff as well as customers

Ability to set expectations, support, and hold people accountable

Reporting and computer skills using Excel, PowerPoint, Word, and SharePoint 

Working knowledge of machining equipment (conventional and CNC mills and lathes, inspection equipment), and outside processes

Proficient at programming with MasterCam for standard and model base definition

Strong understanding of current machining practices, tooling, equipment, technology, and trends

Competency with common machine-shop and safety practices

Possess a strong understanding of common manufacturing processes (EDM, waterjet, laser cutting, welding, and sheet metal fabrication)

Ability to develop strategic recommendations for increasing capability and growth

Individual must be a highly motivated self-starter with strong attention to detail, great follow-through, and work with little supervision.


Required Education:

High school diploma with 7+ years’ training/experience as a machinist and 3+ years’ training/experience in management 


Physical Requirements:

Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer, as well as physically capable of navigating a working machine shop to actively manage staff.

Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.

Able to wear Personal Protective Equipment, safety glasses and closed toe shoes.


Special Requirements:

Ability to work flexible hours. 

U.S. citizen or permanent resident status required.


Compensation:

The base salary range for this full-time position is $99,705 - $124,683 + bonus + benefits.
