Job Description

The Audience Development team at Torstar is seeking a passionate data professional to support our business priorities through actionable insights and analysis. The Data Analyst – News Analytics is responsible for delivering exceptional data products and analysis that help drive revenue growth. You possess a hybrid skillset of strong analytical depth coupled with rock solid technical expertise which enables you to deliver high quality reporting, visualizations, analysis and recommendations to multiple business units within the company.

  • Develop and maintain dashboards, reports, and visualizations that track key performance indicators (KPIs) for audience development, engagement, content performance, and digital subscription growth. 
  • Analyze large datasets to identify trends, patterns, and insights that support editorial decisions and business objectives 
  • Work cross functionally to ensure that the data required by our stakeholders is collected and reported accurately to produce actionable insights and ultimately drive successful business outcomes. 
  • Present findings in a clear, actionable format to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. 
  • Automate data extraction processes and streamline reporting systems to improve operational efficiency. 
  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends, tools, and techniques to ensure the Torstar’s data capabilities remain cutting-edge. 
  • Maintain a high attention to detail ensuring that everything that comes from our team is accurate and thoroughly vetted 

Hybrid Work - 2 to 3 times in office per week

Torstar’s office space is located at The Well, a dynamic community in downtown Toronto, just down the street from Union Station. In addition to the neighbourhood’s rich amenities (eat, shop, work, play) our workspace occupies an entire floor in the tower at 8 Spadina, offering boardrooms, social spaces and over 100 accessible hotelling desks for your WAFH (work away from home) convenience.


Qualifications

  • Expert skill and knowledge of SQL (there will be a live test), Excel, relational databases & data warehouses
  • 2+ years experience with data visualization tools and techniques. Tableau strongly preferred. 
  • Experience with cloud platforms and associated tools (e.g. AWS and Snowflake). 
  • Familiarity with digital analytics tools like Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics or similar.
  • Analytical strategic thinking with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail 
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to precisely and clearly convey results/analysis/visualization to non-technical audiences 
  • Highly motivated, curious and independent worker 
  • A passion for journalism and the media industry.
