Position Overview
The Legal Staff Counsel supporting Global Purchasing and Supply Chain (GPSC) will provide strategic, solutions-oriented legal guidance on commercial, procurement, and supply chain matters. The ideal candidate is a business-minded attorney with strong judgment, the ability to navigate complex transactions, and the agility to support fast-moving business objectives. Experience with intellectual property or technology transactions is valuable but not required.
This role requires a proactive self-starter who can manage multiple priorities, collaborate across legal and business teams, and deliver clear, pragmatic advice aligned to GM's broader strategic and financial goals.
Job Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
  • Draft, negotiate, and interpret complex commercial agreements, including strategic sourcing, technology, licensing, and supply-chain-related contracts.
  • Provide legal and strategic advice to GPSC clients to advance business objectives while appropriately balancing risk.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to structure transactions, resolve legal issues, and support execution of key initiatives.
  • Develop, refine, and implement contracting processes, playbooks, templates, and training to improve efficiency and consistency.
  • Analyze and advise on complex, multi-factor legal and operational issues with clarity, judgment, and an enterprise-wide risk perspective.
  • Build strong working relationships with clients, legal colleagues, and business partners across GM.

Required Qualifications
  • 6+ years of legal experience with a focus on commercial or transactional matters.
  • Must be licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction; ability to obtain Michigan in-house counsel admission if required.
  • Experience advising on strategic commercial relationships or high-value transactions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable guidance.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across multiple legal practice groups and business functions.
  • Proven track record of initiative, integrity, resilience, and managing multiple large-scale projects.
  • Experience identifying and implementing process improvements or operational efficiencies.

Preferred Qualifications & Additional Information
  • Experience using or willingness to adopt AI-powered legal tools, contract automation systems, advanced research platforms, and other technology-enabled resources.
  • Exposure to technology transactions or intellectual property issues (preferred, not required).
  • Limited domestic or international travel may be necessary.
  • Hybrid or on-site work expectations may apply depending on GM policy.

Compensation:
The compensation information is a good faith estimate only. It is based on what a successful applicant might be paid in accordance with applicable state laws.
The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position, as well as geography of the selected candidate.
  • The salary range for this role is $201,600 - $309,900. The actual base salary a successful candidate will be offered within this range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
  • Bonus Potential: An incentive pay program offers payouts based on company performance, job level, and individual performance.

This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the selected candidate is expected to report to a specific location at least 3 times a week {or other frequency dictated by their manager}.
The selected candidate will be required to travel <25% for this role.
