As corporate legal counsel for Desjardins’ property and casualty insurance group, you play a key role in protecting the organization’s legal interests by ensuring it complies with all laws and that its rights are protected and obligations are met. You will be responsible for advising on regulatory matters, insurance products and best practices for the automobile, property and commercial insurance lines of business for the Ontario, Atlantic and Western regions. Areas of responsibility may include legal research, insurance policy wording review, marketing, commercial contracting, privacy matters and supporting strategic and innovation initiatives. The role also involves oversight of strategic litigation. At Desjardins, we emphasize the legal affairs department as a strategic partner of the business units. You propose recommendations, solutions and action plans based on the organization’s objectives and priorities. You share ideas and help solve problems using your analytical skills and extensive knowledge of legal matters involving the lines of business. You interact with stakeholders working in other fields. Interpersonal savvy is therefore essential. More specifically, you will be required to:

Advise and support the organization’s units and decision-making bodies on the handling and execution of initiatives

Issue legal opinions and recommendations

Organize, coordinate and attend meetings, including meetings of decision-making bodies

Prepare Legal drafting

Help diagnose issues, challenges and needs to determine target outcomes

Monitor the industry to understand and anticipate trends in your line of work and help prepare recommendations to develop best practices for the organization

Serve as resource person for your department, clients and partners

Bachelor's degree in a related field

A minimum of five years of relevant experience
