Continuing Education and Professional Studies (CEPS) at SAIT offers a wide range of programs designed to support lifelong learning, career advancement (through reskilling and upskilling) and customized talent development solutions for corporations. Join a team passionate about building lifelong learning opportunities that help people in Calgary and around the globe navigate the changing world of work.

We are looking for a SME who can help us move our Industrial Instrumentation Certificate from a traditional instrumentation curriculum toward a modern, industry-aligned Industrial Instrumentation and Automation learning pathway that prepares learners for both today’s workplace and the evolving industrial environment. The ideal SME possesses industry experience, technical leadership, curriculum/training experience and awareness of emerging technologies.

The engagement would initially focus on a comprehensive curriculum and market review, followed by recommendations and support for the redesign of the Industrial Instrumentation suite.

We are looking for an experienced industry professional with 10 years of relevant industrial experience, preferably with significant recent experience in one or more of the following environments:

  • Oil and gas / petrochemical
  • Energy and power generation
  • Manufacturing
  • Chemical/process industries
  • Industrial automation
  • Process control
  • Industrial electrical/instrumentation systems
  • Mining or other heavy industrial environment

Responsibilities

    • Review the existing Industrial Instrumentation curriculum and identify outdated or redundant content.
    • Recommend current and emerging industry-relevant topics.
    • Identify knowledge and skill gaps based on current workplace requirements.
    • Recommend new courses/modules and determine which existing courses should be substantially revised or retired.
    • Develop/revise course learning outcomes and technical content.
    • Ensure appropriate progression from foundational concepts to intermediate and advanced applications.
    • Recommend practical, scenario-based and industry-based learning activities.
    • Identify appropriate software, simulation tools, industrial platforms or technologies that could enhance learning.
    • Incorporate relevant AI/digital technology applications into the curriculum.
    • Review assessments to ensure they measure practical workplace competencies.
    • Provide recommendations on industry standards, technologies and best practices that should be reflected in the curriculum.
    • Validate the overall certificate structure and its relevance to current and future workforce needs.
    • Evaluate gaps and prioritize skill requirements
    • Provide training recommendations needed
    • Maintain reliability and accountability to timelines and project milestones.
    • Maintain attentiveness to the deliverables of the engagement and respond to communication in a timely manner
    • Complete SAIT training as required

Qualifications & Experience

The individual should have strong practical experience in instrumentation, automation and process control, rather than being solely academically focused.

    • Industrial instrumentation and measurement systems
    • Process control and automation
    • Pressure, temperature, flow and level measurement
    • Instrument calibration and maintenance
    • Control valves and final control elements
    • PLCs, DCS and SCADA systems
    • PID control and process optimization
    • Industrial communications and networking
    • 4–20 mA, HART and other industrial communication protocols
    • FOUNDATION Fieldbus and/or modern industrial Ethernet technologies
    • Smart instrumentation and digital control systems
    • Industrial IoT (IIoT) and connected instrumentation
    • Condition monitoring and predictive maintenance
    • Functional/process safety and instrumentation reliability
    • Cybersecurity considerations for industrial control systems
    • Data acquisition, historian systems and industrial analytics
    • Modern automation architectures and integration
    • The SME does not necessarily need to be an AI specialist. However, they should be able to identify where AI and emerging digital technologies genuinely add value to instrumentation and process control, rather than simply adding AI as a standalone topic.

Experience or demonstrated knowledge in areas such as the following would be highly desirable:

      • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning applications in industrial environments
      • AI-assisted troubleshooting and diagnostics
      • Predictive and prescriptive maintenance
      • Anomaly detection using instrumentation/process data
      • AI-enabled process optimization
      • Digital twins and simulation
      • Industrial data analytics
      • Edge computing and IIoT
      • Smart sensors and intelligent instrumentation
      • Generative AI applications for industrial/technical workflows
      • Human-machine collaboration and AI-assisted decision-making
        • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, or related.
        • Industry experience; prior experience and expertise in the field of Industrial Instrumentation.
        • Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.
        • Teaching, training, and/or mentoring experience are considered an asset.
        • Ability to work autonomously as part of a larger team, capable of self-directing and taking the initiative to drive towards outcomes.
        • Experience in education, technical training, curriculum development or competency-based learning would be an asset.
        • Ability to effectively and efficiently communicate with large groups verbally and in writing (public speaking competence).
        • Positive and respectful attitude.
