Job Description
We are presently recruiting for an Associate within the Data Scouting team, part of the Technology and Operations. CPP Investments’ Data Scouting group is primarily accountable for strategic and tactical data sourcing for our business partners and relationship management of third-party data providers. The group also holds end to end responsibility for contracting including the negotiation and establishment of commercial and contract terms. The group also assists internal Business Partners with activities related to expense management and budgeting.
You will play a key role in the following activities including, but not limited to:
Data Scouting
- As a data subject matter expert and through a data-centric lens, work with Business Partners and data consumers within the firm to support the various data driven investment strategies and data consumer priorities
- Proactively source, evaluate and on-board data with existing and new providers
- Work directly with portfolio managers to prioritize and execute data scouting projects
- Provide consultative advice and educate Business Partners and data consumers on diverse data categories to enhance the knowledge and efficient adoption of data usage such as with fast moving alternative data categories
- Engage with Business Partners including data delivery, data operations, data scientists, data engineers, and investment management teams to onboard sourced data
Relationship Management
- Establish and maintain deep relationships with 3rd party data providers, setting clear direction for the partnership and ensuring efficient lines of communication
- Become the trusted source internally to identify, prioritize and develop new data partnership prospects and the trusted source to data providers to maintain and optimize commercial models and approach with new datasets
- Engage with data vendors as needed to enhance and/or resolve issues pertaining but not limited to data licensing, data usage, data errors, and data delivery options
- Within a business-centric data consumer engagement model, develop and maintain data usage profiles to help inform business data strategies
- Collaborate with departments across the company to identify creative applications of disparate data sources
- Create and maintain reports and communications proactively, internally, to advance and share knowledge
Qualifications
- University degree or diploma education, CFA/CAIA designation an asset
- 5+ years of experience in financial services; sell-side, buy-side, management consulting; or business strategy/corporate development
- Strong and concise communication experience with investment teams, product teams, data engineering teams
- Natural explorer and curious mind with excellent communication and proven negotiation skills
- Exhibits strong decision making, time management skills and sets priorities
- Data Scouting/Management, Product Management or Account Management experience would be considered an asset
- Exceptional listening skills in translating open-ended data requests into actionable data searches that yield data products that will meet the needs of business teams
- Experience interpreting and working with data catalogs, data dictionaries, sample data files to determine value, accuracy and relevance as well as familiarity with data delivery methods (i.e., data feeds, SFTP, API, Cloud etc.) an asset
- Proven ability to identify datasets that create value in the investment process
- Eagerness to execute with strong work ethic and a sense of urgency and at times through ambiguity requiring keen decision making
