Job Description
In close collaboration with the Refinery Manager, the Assistant Refinery Manager will be responsible for aspects of production and operations in the Refinery of a Canola crushing facility. This position includes supervision and coordination between two Refinery plants at the LDC Yorkton site, which includes the existing facility and the new facility currently being constructed as part of our ongoing site-expansion. This person will work independently with supervision to help develop and support the goals and strategies of the Company and the facility. Duties and responsibilities include:

- Provide assistance with directing, maintaining and enforcing safety programs for all personnel and plant equipment
- Ensure all applicable government regulations are met at all times
- Assist in site construction management. Ensure that project goals are met. Prepare the plant for commissioning and startup
- Complete regular checks of refinery operators and equipment to ensure that standard operating procedures are followed and Company standards are met.
- Maintain proper coverage by managing the refinery operator schedules.
- Assist with planning and managing refinery budget to meet facility needs and production goals.
- Maintain inventory of supplies to ensure efficient refinery operation
- Make improvements to the refinery process as necessary to maximize efficiency, increase product quality and/or lower costs.
- Respond to refinery issues or alarms and lead investigations as necessary.
- Collect, record and analyze refinery data to optimize efficiencies and product quality.
- Serve as the liaison between the Assistant Plant Manager, Refinery Manager, Refinery Supervisors and the refinery operators.
- Notify the Refinery Manager of potential safety hazards, equipment failures, operational inconsistencies and employee incidents.
- Report any refinery equipment issues to maintenance.
- Deliver job-related training to refinery operators to increase efficiency and safety.
- Coach and mentor Supervisors and operators on the Company’s performance expectations and provide ongoing performance feedback.
- Develop training and operating procedures as needed / directed
- Develop and implement production and quality measurement and control systems
- Direct and coordinate production, processing, and maintenance activities
- Review operations and confer with technical or administrative resources to resolve production opportunities, improve efficiency, or otherwise reduce cost
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Refinery Manager
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree, preferably in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering or Manufacturing preferred
- 5 or more years of relevant work experience, ideally in a canola oil or vegetable oil refinery.
- 10 or more years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must have previous supervisory or management experience.
- Must be well organized, self motivated and be able to work effectively under pressure or unexpected timelines.
- Demonstrates leadership ability in a plant leadership position.
- Previous experience working within a unionized environment is preferred.
- Able to set clear, reasonable expectations and hold operators accountable.
- Able to provide and maintain a safe and effective working environment.
- Previous exposure to project development and commissioning.
- Working knowledge of budgets, process reports, and other financial statements.
- Proficient with standard software products, including the entire Microsoft Suite.
- Experienced using production machinery such as Centrifuge, Bleacher, Deodorizer, filters pumps and Heat Exchangers.
- Able to work within continuous 24/7 plant operations with may require extended days as well as off-shift call-in requirements when needed.
- Able to perform heavy lifting of manufacturing materials and products, as well as regular stair climbing and extended periods of walking and standing in order to access and occasionally work in remote areas of the plant, and able to work at heights and in confined spaces. Personal Protective Equipment will be worn in compliance with Company standards and government regulations.
- Able to work in environments with regular exposure to varying temperatures and prevailing weather conditions; regular exposure to gases, vapors, dust, odors and flammable liquids; occasional exposure to areas with wet floors and high volume of noise
