Job Description

AECOM is currently seeking candidates for Archaeology Field Technician positions (Levels 1 – 4), based out of our offices in London, Barrie, Peterborough, Sault St. Marie, Timmins,  Mississauga, or Hamilton. These are unionized positions under the collective agreement with LiUNA.

Technicians will support archaeological fieldwork (Stages 2–4) under the guidance of a Field Supervisor, including artifact recovery, field documentation, and assisting with team leadership and training. Travel across Ontario and working in all weather conditions will be required.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct archaeological field work under the guidance of a field supervisor.
  • Identify and recover Indigenous and Euro-Canadian artifacts
  • Follow Health and Safety protocols adhere to all AECOM procedures.
  • Travel extensively across Ontario for extended periods.
  • Take on a junior leadership role during field operations.
  • Assist the Field Supervisor with technical aspects of field work.
  • Contribute to the training of new team members.
  • Set an example for teammates and undertake additional tasks as assigned by field supervisors or management.

Please be advised that LIUNA has been certified by the Labour Relations Board to bargain on behalf of persons in the above noted position. The parties have entered a collective bargaining agreement & any candidate who is hired into the noted role will be kept informed of any changes to the terms & conditions of their employment because of that process.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • High school diploma
  • For level II + roles, previous relevant work experience is required
  • Must be able to perform strenuous archaeological fieldwork (lift up to 40lbs and be capable of repetitive movement).
  • Communicate information, issues, concerns related to the site work in an effective and professional manner to Field Supervisor.
  • Attend work in a timely manner, prepared for all weather conditions and ensuring appropriate weather gear is readily available.
  • Reliable transportation to and from assigned office or designated project meet spot is essential.
  • Sensitivity and awareness combined with a respectful attitude towards Indigenous culture and people is a must.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in archaeology or anthropology.
  • Proven ability to recognize cultural material and collect in a controlled manner.
  • Proven physical ability and care when conducting excavations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license.
  • Demonstrated ability to support Field Supervisor with technical aspects of archaeology & leading the team.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of MCM Standards & Guidelines for Consultant Archaeologists

Examples of Previous Experience and Education that Might Be Good Preparation for this Role:

  • Forestry, Fish & Wildlife, Arborist, Environmental Technologist, Conservation Ecology, Indigenous Studies, GIS studies

Examples of Hobbies that Might be Good Preparation for this Role: 

  • Rock climbing, hiking, mountaineering, mountain biking, camping, canoeing, team sports, long-distance running

Additional Information

  • Under the Collective Agreement between AECOM and LiUNA, the compensation for Archaeology Field Technician I, II, III and IV at AECOM for the 2025 field season will be between $24.48 to $29.44.
  • Level Assignment: Candidates may be hired as Archaeology Field Technician Level 1, Level 2, Level 3, or Level 4. The level is determined during the hiring process based on experience, education, professional designations/licenses, and other relevant factors.
  • AECOM and LiUNA will be renegotiating their Collective Agreement in 2026.
