Coinbase Mission, Purpose & Impact

Organizational Mission

Coinbase is a mission-first company and all work is prioritized in service of creating economic freedom in the world. Examples include:

  • Expanding global access to crypto via Coinbase International Exchange and perpetual futures on Coinbase Advanced for eligible non‑US customers.
  • Improving onchain access to trusted digital dollars via native USDC on Base (issued by Circle), reducing bridging friction and improving UX.
  • Backing builders via Coinbase Ventures, which regularly publishes public content on priority themes in crypto.

Coinbase Employee Perspectives

Tell us about Coinbase’s mission. How does that mission influence the company culture, and did it impact your decision to join the team?

Coinbase’s mission is to increase economic freedom in the world and is the central force shaping our culture, which was a key reason behind why I joined. It drives us to build trustworthy, well-regulated crypto products that open access to financial tools globally. We’re taking major steps toward democratizing access to a broader financial system by building the “everything exchange,” which includes tokenized equities, applications and other decentralized assets all on one onchain platform. And we’re just getting started.

I was — and still am — inspired not only by what we are building but also by Coinbase’s cultural tenets, especially Top Talent and Championship Team. Together, they create an environment of collaboration, drive and excellence, where high performance is expected but also recognized and celebrated. Working with such talented colleagues on products that expand global access to finance perfectly aligns with my own passion for building technology that improves people’s lives. That combination of mission and culture motivates me every day to ship the best products I can as a software engineer.

From your perspective, how does your work connect to the overall company mission?

I’m fortunate to be on a team that owns highly visible parts of the mobile app, placing my work at the heart of the UX. My team manages some of Coinbase’s most critical, high-traffic services, including those responsible for displaying detailed data for every asset, used across the app. We also meticulously monitor key performance metrics like error rates and latency using cutting-edge internal tooling. This vigilance allows us to maintain a fast, reliable and seamless experience for our users. The pages we own see some of the highest traffic in the app. By building core features to provide simple, clear and insightful access to crypto while making trading and transaction activity easy to understand, we are empowering our users with the tools they need. This focus on our customers directly impacts our mission to increase economic freedom around the world.

What advice would you give a jobseeker hoping to join your company?

From a software engineering perspective, technical excellence is the foundation. However, what truly helps you stand out is being “crypto-forward.” Go beyond just the investment side and actively use the technology. Explore onchain apps, like using the newly refreshed Base App to post content or use stablecoins like USDC to pay for products and services. Taking the time to understand crypto-native concepts like stablecoins and smart contracts will give you a much deeper appreciation for the space. This genuine, hands-on interest shows you’re passionate about the industry and will definitely give you an edge.
